What's the best way to do a power steering fluid swap?

I was just going ot pull the tube out of the ps pump and let er go, but I thought I'd ask if there was a more efficient way to get all the fluid out. Also, there looks to be something like a fill plug on top of the steering gear box. Should I refill it there or through the pump itself? How much will I need to re-fill the system?

I normaly use a turkey baster. If you use your moms house on dont reuturn it to her. LOL Wife was real mad when I used her and then she could not find it.

Take the fluid out then add more then turn on the car and run it keep do this and eventuly all the fluid will be replaced.

DONT take it the line out and run the car it you can ruin the pump and the gear box.

I cant rember how much fluid I used maybe a couple of quarts

Re: What's the best way to do a power steering fluid swap?

I'll be doing this basically only because I have the entire steering system out, and it's pretty much drained from doing this.

But If I were to do it on the car, I would probably pull the belt off, pull the return hose off the pump (pump will drain a bit, so have a catch can ready), put a cap over this port and then run the line from the pump to a catch can. spin the pump by hand, and get as much out this way as you can, then add some new fluid to the pump reseviour, continue spinning by hand, until you get only new clean fluid from the steering gear (return hose). Connect the return hose back to the pump, replace belt, add fluid as nessisary.

You should be able to push the fluid through by turning the power steering pump by hand, if not a small elecrtic motor with a belt, or even a rubber gear that is pushed against the power steering pulley will be a good way to spin the pump, easy control with an on/off switch.

Shouldn't this thread be HERE?

Heres the way ive done it........ just suck the reservior empty, refill it w/ new fluid. run the car while turning the wheel stop to stop a few times. then repeat the process till the fluid in the reservior is looking clean. its a lot cleaner than pulling a hose off, but it does take more fluid but thats not much $$. the fluid flush machines basically do the same thing, suck it down while refilling and turning the wheel.

The 'plug' in the top of the gear box is the adjustment nut for the pitman shaft-rack lash. It's best left alone unless you plan to bench adjust it off the car.
