1992 Firebird 3.1 ROugh idle and eract shift while driving

Okay here the problem.

Wife had to drive my car while I was fixing her tramission leak.

Car has 165000 miles on it

So here is the problem

Has rough Idle seems to be all over 650-900 rpm

WHen you drive it crusing at stedy speed. The trans will shift and the rpms will go up to a bout 2,000 then the rpms will settle back down to 1500. It will repeat it self a couple of times. It does not do this all the time. It will also shrudder and shake when driving.

I noticed when I put it in gear. The trans seems like in makes some type pf a grinding noise again not all the time. Trans fluid looks red. It was pretty nasting when I got the car 2 years ago. And between tans fluid change at that time and and engine swap which was a bads idea and i went back to my orginal engine.

I am kind of wondering if the trans is going out. I tried to run the car in drive also wiht no difference in the way it runs.

Since most of the tune up stuff has been done.
What has been replaced.

Coil 2 year old
Igniton module only 2 year old
Pick up coil Sept 2007
Collant temp sensor ept 2007
Plugs were replaced wires were tested with a multimeter Sept 2007

Injectors were tested 1.5 years ago and replaced.
New timing chain ran good after replacement Sept 2007
New head gasket Sept 2007
Timing was checked.
FUel pressure was good also at idle 40 psi revied it up no change in pressure
(but not in gear)
Throttle positoning sensor New 2 years ago

1. Trans is shot. No ifs, ands or buts, it's shot and needs to be rebuilt/replaced. Your clutches are toast and they're slipping, and your pump isn't anywhere near as strong as it should be (grinding noise probably from the pump).
2. After you look for vac leaks, which it sounds like you MAY have, go in and check your valve settings. These engines are a pain to get the setting right.

did not have any problems on the valves since adjusted in sept so I dont hink that is it.

Will check for vavvum leaks. All the lines have been replaced with rubber but will go back and take a look

That what I am thinking on the trans also

I cleaned the throttle body passage. Boy it took a long time for it to stop running black and then I replaced the IAC with a used one I had. Also checked all vaccum lines car ran much better.

Also put a can of seafoam (the type for trans)

Took it out on a drive and no surge ran like a champ. Thanks for everything.

Hav a spare 700r4 from a parts car will probably ahve that rebuilt
