Stumbles on decel
Hello! I have a 92 RS with the mostly stock 3.1 Last week I am slowing down to make a turn and it just stalled. I came to a stop, and it fired right back up. It cruises and accelerates just fine just when I slow down to stop it stumbles, surges, stumbles then levels off. It has not stalled since but the rpms drop to about 500 then picks back up to normal. I do have a slightly erratic idle. The evap can, soleniod, and purge valve is new. My fuel pressure is good, its not running too rich, and the cap rotor plugs and coil were replaced some time ago because the original stuff was worn.

check the codes, then think about spark plug gaps - mine was real sensitive to these and was running how yours is untill i regaped them- took me 6 months to work it out though as its never top of the list eh? always figure something more importants wrong lol

only code is 32 for egr, conditions exist whether egr is plugged in or not.

Check all your vac lines as well. If it runs fine except for around idle I wouldnt think that it would be the spark plugs. Your EGR might also be bad, which could cause stalling, as previously mentioned.

Well, changed back to my autolite plugs, made sure they were all gapped to .045 and the problem is still there... the only difference is the car ran hotter... ??? Checked all my vacuum lines, they all seem ok including the ones I have yet to replace. I picked up a new EGR soleniod gasket. Gonna pull that off next and manually activate the pintles see if any of them are hanging up...

try checking the TPS is giving the correct figures at different openings. as long as the measurements are still with in a 'limit' the ecu will not chuck a code out. but thats dosnt mean its reading right.

I had the same thing happen to my 92 and it was the egr valve. So i just blocked it off and it has ran fine since.

Re: Stumbles on decel
do you still get the check engine light with your egr blocked off?
----------
I will check the TPS... makes sense if the throttle is gummed up with carbon it would give me a false reading...

Well, kudos to the man who suggested the vacuum leak... Thankyou Grimmcs
Since my last post the problem became worse... It stalled every time I turned a corner or came to a stop and my fuel consumption was horrible.
I pulled out my handheld vacuum pump from the bottom of my toolbox, blew the dust off and started checking all the vacuum operated components in the car. The brake booster is good, the MAP sensor is good, the cruise and vacuum reserve tank are good. There was no vacuum to the climate controls. Turns out there was a broken retaining tab that held together the vent door solenoid switcher on the control head. Gee... you think I would have been clued in when I heard all the vent doors banging around in the dash every time I started the car
... Well, I took it out for a cruise.. Ran better, but still stalling. The only things left were the fuel pressure regulator and the smog pump. Well the line to the smog pump would not hold vacuum, so I capped off the feed to the pump and we are not stalling!!!
It still gets a little shaky on the idle as I come to a stop. But much better!
I also noticed that the code 32 is popping up less that before. I understand that the ECM monitors correct EGR operation through calibrated voltage changes in the MAP, so I am closer to solving that issue. The next thing is to see if any of the pintles are hanging up in the solenoid itself. That would definately cause a shaky idle when slowing to a stop as 2.8rs mentioned and cause a voltage reading from the MAP that is out of range.
Thankyou for the help. I will keep you posted as I work through this
