external balance to internal balance
So my 86 T5 bird is external balance.
If I get EricW internal balanced engine all I gotta do is get a netural balanced flywheel for the stick???
Or knock the weights off my external balance one???
[I assume they are all netural balanced, then they add weights in the proper spots?]

Re: external balance to internal balance
Id assume also that the front balancer pulley is fine that on the engine???
It was in a fiero he said.

Re: external balance to internal balance
Forget the Fiero engine.
The starter is on the wrong side and there is not enough block material on the proper side to drill and tap for the starter.
You can use the internals on/in yoru current block however.
But to answer the flywheel question, you need to get one from an internally balanced F-body, S-series should work as well. You can't simply "knock off" the weight on a flywheel, it's cast into the flywheel itself.
On a flexplate, the weight is welded on.

Re: external balance to internal balance
The surface of the block isn't machined smooth, but you can usually just have the other side of the block drilled and tapped for the starter. It's kind of a hackjob, but it's worked for plenty of people. Machine shop charged my buddy $30 to drill and tap a 3.1 Firebird block that ended up in a 86.5 Fiero GT.

Re: external balance to internal balance
The 3.1 block I threw away looked like it had enough meat to drill and tap for the starter, but I wasn't happy with how it was going to come out. I ended up throwing a fully machined, overbored, 3.1 block in the car when I crushed it. I wouldn't recommend doing it either way. Like I said, it's a hackjob.

Re: external balance to internal balance
Guess Im gonna hafta wait, no rush on making the deal then.
I got a new trans on a truck heading here for my V8 car.
I need to get it all done right before I spend bunch more on the Bird.
Just I really don't like the lower oil PSI, I got 20 or less, had a constant 40+ for 7+ years even with over 200K but one oil change using Rotella cleaned to well.
lucas, motor honey, thick oil don't help.
Dunno if the trouble of just putting in a new oil pump would help. Since it still runs strong id assume the pump is just worn but who knows. Might of been oil resiude also filling up slack in bearings..........
But it just sucks as I don't feel comfy driving it as is and gas is so high........
