Single to Dual Exhaust

Can a car that came from the factory with a single exhaust be converted to dual exhaust? I have the common muffler with two pipes coming out of it so it looks like duals if you don't know what you are looking at, but I think I can get a little better performance and sound out of it with a couple of flowmasters instead of just the one. Is this a pretty simple upgrade, or more complex than it sounds?

Re: Single to Dual Exhaust

Are you wanting to run true duals or just a single pipe over the axel split into 2 mufflers. If you are wanting to do it that way then just get a muffler that has 2 exists.

True duals. That will produce better air flow correct?

Re: Single to Dual Exhaust

Yes and no. On a V6 its really not that practical and it would have to be built right. I would just go a single pipe to dual exits. I asked the same question a while back and there was a pretty good discussion on the subject. Read through this to learn about it:

edit:
Seems like the link doesn't want to work. If you want to read up on dual exhaut then search for the thread "true dual exhaust" and my username, that should turn something up.

Re: Single to Dual Exhaust

It has actually been proven the a properly built and sized single exhaust will perform exactly the same as a true dual system that is also properly built and sized.

Under our cars there is very little room for fitment, so there's one issue.

As long as everything is done right, you will not gain any performance with true duals over a single pipe system.

I'll see if I can find the link to the site that proves that for you

Though it sound good on a V8 lol. Lack of back pressure would be my concern. I hate my exhaust system (in sig). Imo i think stock system worked well, not really worth redoing it.
