88 RS Lumpy Idle???
I have a 1988 Camaro RS with a 2.8L V-6 and automatic trans. For some ungodly reason, it has a lumpy idle like a camed-out 350 or 427. It runs fine and all, but I don't have any idea why it "lumps". The car didn't run when i got it, but I had to change the fuel injectors in it and I went with Summit 15lb'ers.
I also had to change the fuel pump (which I changed standard), intake gaskets, and pretty much all of the vacuum lines. My theory why it "lumps" is because the injectors don't match up to what the computer is programmed to. I don't know what injectors were in it before and I didn't get the engine computer re-programmed for the new injectors yet because I can't find any place here in NW Ohio that has computer programs that go back that far. My cousin even works at a GM dealership and he checked for me and said the same thing; they don't have programs that old.
Is it what I think it is? If so, where can i get the computer re-programmed?? If not, what's wrong with my baby??
Thanks for any and all help.

Re: 88 RS Lumpy Idle???
Yes, my Check engine light is on...
Idk if my EGR has a vacuum line direct to it right off hand. I'll have to check when it's daylight.
Thanks for the help so far, but please keep the comments/info coming. I will probably get a TPS ASAP. I think I also need a CSV (cold start valve) because it wants to idle high/low/high/low when I first start it up for the day (basically when it gets cold). But after about 2 minutes it works it out and just sits and idles fine until it gets warmer then it jumps down and "lumps".

Re: 88 RS Lumpy Idle???
Check out your codes first and reset your TPS, move the arm on it and check for any sudden jumps in voltage.

TPS adjustment:
https://www.thirdgen.org/tpimod2
To check the codes you can go to a parts store or get a piece of wire and stick it into the OBDI port. Turn the key on and then stick the wire into the upper right 2 pins and the light will flash to whatever code exists.
I would suggest getting a Haynes manual, they are only $20 and contain lots of useful info.
edit:
The search here sucks, I can't find the thead with how to check codes.

Re: 88 RS Lumpy Idle???
OBDI Port? What is this/where is this? Where will the light be to flash the code, on the OBDI?? I have 15lb injectors in it now.
Off subject; I have another drive line exactly like mine but I want to "build it out" just a little. What should I do If I want to put 24lb injectors in it to make it run the way it should?? Keep in mind, THIS drive line is going in another camaro.
Thanks for all your help. Everyone.

Re: 88 RS Lumpy Idle???
24lb for a V6? That would be a pretty strong build to really use somehting that big.
The OBDI port is right under the dash on the driver's side close to the center console. The light that flashes is the check engine light.

Re: 88 RS Lumpy Idle???
Oh, ok. So, if the check engine light comes on, it's good??
So, would 19lb'ers work for that separate V-6?? What's NA?

----------
Power: 325 horespower
Number of injectors: 6
BSFC: 0.40

Re: 88 RS Lumpy Idle???
Check engine means that someting is messing up. Found the link:
https://www.thirdgen.org/service-eng...ht-error-codes
It says to plug the wire into #6 and #12 but for the V6 you should use #5 and #6 (upper right two)

Re: 88 RS Lumpy Idle???
Ok. I checked the EGR valve, and it does not have a direct vacuum line going to it. But just to be sure, I unplugged the lines that are going to it and plugged the lines themselves and plugged the EGR and it did not change the idle at all and the engine was up to temp.
I printed off the page that told about checking the codes and it was quite confusing to me. I think I get how the sequence it supposed to go to get 12, but I don't understand haw you are supposed to make out any of the other codes. Can someone please break this down and explain in a little bit better detail for me?
I did not check the IAC b/c I don't have a DVOM on hand, but I will when I get a chance to use my friend's.
Thanks for all of the help. I have learned alot more about the "newer" style of engines. Before my Camaro, all I worked on were carbureted V-8's without all of the electronic wiring and computer chips.
