Crankshaft Keyway Position/Timing Mark Setting
Can anyone tell me if the keyway in the crankshaft lines up to the #1 rod journal? I have been trying to get the timing mark set correctly.
As you know, the timing indicator is adjustable, and some previous owner slid mine all the way to the left, so when it shows correct timing, it actually has a huge advance. I found this out while doing a timing chain replacement. I slid it all the way to the right, I think that should be correct.
If I knew for a fact the keyway in the crank lines up exactly to the #1 rod, I could figure 30 degrees left of 12 o'clock is TDC. I found a diagram for installing chains and it says 27 degrees, but that puts my timing mark at a little over 2 degrees ATDC. 30 degrees would line it up perfectly.
Anyone know?
Thanks,
Bob

Thanks, but I already did the timing chain, it is completely assembled and running. I just want to verify the pointer is right without stripping it down again.

Just a note to any future readers of this thread:
Yes, the keyway lines up exactly to the #1 journal, I went to a crankshaft shop, and, in fact, every crank I saw there that had a keyway had it aligned with the #1 rod journal.
