Fuel Pump Install

My brother has a 87 2.8 Camaro, with a dead pump. We bought a new one, and want to do the trap-door method instead of dropping the tank completely. Can you do this on the 3rd gens? I know you can on my 4th gen, but wasn't too sure. If so, any write-ups on it? I searched for fuel pump installs and couldn't really find it.

Re: Fuel Pump Install

Try searching somewhere other than v6, since it's all thirdgen related. And yes, you can. Gotta be real careful if the tank is still in. I found several threads in the Fabrication forum by using "fuel pump access". We typically refer to it as an access panel.

Re: Fuel Pump Install

I did the access door on my Camaro. Search for some threads as it has been covered many times. IIRC the tank is only like an inch below the sheetmetal so don't puncture it.

It never occured to me to search for access panel. I've always heard it referred to as the trap door method; I searched for that and "fuel pump install" and didn't come up with anything.

Anyways, my dad's under the car right now; when I did search for "access panel" I got a lot of posts saying dropping the rear is just as easy, so we went ahead and did it that way.

Sure.

Until you have to drop it a second time for a new/different pump. A well-done access panel is a far more efficient use of your time than dropping the rear.
