no start - vacuum problems??!

I've gotten a lot of useful info on this forum so maybe you guys can help me get this car to start for more than a few seconds. first off the car is a 1985 pontiac firebird w/ 2.8 v-6, 5spd w/ t-tops. i got the car for a steal but it hadn't been driven for 3 years or so. the wiring and vacuum hoses were a mess so i had it towed to my house to work on it here. at first the car would start for a few seconds then die out. it would also die when you applied the gas in any amount and wouldn't start if you had the gas pedal anywhere past idle. so yesterday i tore into her and fixed a lot of the wiring problems and tried to re-route my vacuum lines according to the sticker on the underside of the hood. my problem is i can't identify some of the switches because i think they're missing and so much stuff has been mickey-moused in this car. i'm beginning to doubt i even identified the egr correctly because according to the sticker it appears in a different location.
the problem i have after all the work i did was that now the car won't start at all and the only noise i can get out of her now is a backfire.
the work i did was to re-splice some of the connections that were loose or screwy before and to change the spark plug wires. i had the distributor and the intake off to clean the intake and get a clear picture of the vacuum hoses underneath and make sure they're where they should be. the intake was re-installed and i don't see a problem with that. the cap was off to have the ignition module tested and it tested good so that was re-installed and new wires installed. i accidentally installed them in the wrong sequence and got a pretty good backfire so i re-did them correctly this time. i should have done them one at a time but didn't so now i'm not 100% on the #1 lead on the cap even though i followed the book.
she still wouldn't start so i checked to make sure i'm getting good spark and i wasn't, so i changed out the coil and now i am getting good spark, but still won't start.
last, i tried to re-route some of the vacuum hoses and she's still backfiring, but only when i spray some starting fluid in. she still refuses to start but i really think that's where i'm getting the backfire from.
now, i haven't checked the fuel pressure yet, but i have checked the pump wires to make sure i'm getting power back there and i am(it was some of the wiring that was screwy that i fixed). i know i'm getting some pressure at least and that's gonna come next but for now i need to stop the backfiring! i am really leaning towards the vacuum routing but i'm just completely lost, please help!!! i'll include some pics to get started on this hose nightmare.

ok, a little more info. in the pic above(not my car) i see that i'm missing a piece on my car. circled in RED is some type of switch or valve that's attached to the alternator bracket. this part is MISSING on my car.

circled in GREEN is a connection that i'm missing as well. where the hose branches off towards the left mine is just the port sticking out of the tube w/ nothing attached. i don't remember exactly but i thought this was a one-way valve?

the BLUE arrow shows the path the egr is taking towards something in the rear? on my car this hose runs towards the right(if you were looking at my engine the way this pic was taken) and goes under the intake to the fuel pressure regulator i believe?

-what is the valve in RED?
-what should be attached to the end of the hose coming off the branch at GREEN?
-where is the hose(BLUE) coming from the egr valve heading to in the rear of the engine?

need help!!!
