Does anyone think rebuilding only the top end will cause problems for the bottom end? Stronger top end + weaker bottom end = problems?

A few problems/questions I've ran into:

1. Stock setup does not have exhaust manifold gaskets. I've researched here and it seems pretty evenly split on adding gaskets. I think I'll just put back on the way it way (no gaskets).

2. Two broken bolts on the exhaust manifold. No wonder I had that annoying popping sound when up-shifting. I always thought it was the deceleration valve.

3. I'll be using the higher performing Viton o-ring for the distributor.

Things replaced:

Distributor-Delphi brand. I believe this is new, not reman. $250.
Injectors-Also Delphi brand. New. $100 each.
All gaskets.
New push rods and rocker arms.

Heads should be back from the machine shop on Tuesday. I'll post more pics then.

Are you not rebuilding the bottom end? I'm a believer that when you tighten the head gaskets on a high mileage motor you run the risk of blowing the rings. Just my experiences. Your heads look really similar to mine when I did it.

I ran gaskets on mine and then drilled out the heads for 3/8" exhaust studs instead of the puny stock bolts.

he some one didn't drain the coolant before pulling the heads.. i can just imagine that engine letting go after u start it back up..

I think I'll have the lower end rebuilt just to be sure. Shouldn't be a problem with the coolant that way either.

You'll still need the coolant out of the oil. However, you can get it out of the cylinders by taking the plugs out and turning it over a couple times if you don't mind the mess.

Looks like the heads are cracked.

Reman long block from Kragen/Autozone: ~$1300

Junk yard, 25k, off a 89 bird: ~$1100
-will have distributor, injectors,...

I don't suppose I can get a new one anywhere...
