Tons of problems with my 89...should I just replace the engine?

My baby, an 89 Firebird with 153k on it. I hear a knocking during acceleration which I assume to be a loose rocker or something (but it wasn't fixed by a tuneup). I've also got gray sludge with white smoke coming out of the exhaust, but my fluids look fine. Now on top of all that, there seems to be a weird electrical problem. The battery dies after sitting for a couple of days and when I try to get it recharged, it overheats. The auto parts store has had to give me a new battery each time. (This has happened 3 times.) And most confusing is that it just dies at random times but i can't find any loose wires or grounds. Starts right back up again though. The guy that I bought the car from installed an atari, sound system, and 6-in screen in the dash, which I think may be part of the problem. Is it worth fixing or should I just throw in a new motor? I'm sick and tired of letting her sit in the garage. Any advice would help.

get the batt/alt tested. also, (at AZ) they can check to see how much voltage is being used w/the car just sitting there, everything off.

White smoke out the tailpipe is usually blown head gasket, but sludge too????
