1992 3.1L

Well I found a really good deal on an RS. They want $1,700 OBO on a 109,000 mile 92 RS with no winter driving on it. No rust and runs like a charm. My plan before was to purchase a 350 and turbo 400 tranny and build those up while driving my current car (nissan sentra) and when those were done I was going to purchase the camaro to put them in, but this is too good of a deal on this car. So my new plan is to daily drive this thing while I get the motor and tranny ready. When they are ready I can swap them in and be good to go. Since this is going to be my daily driver, all it needs to be is reliable. What are some common problems on the 92 RS 3.1L? My moms boyfriend told me fuel pumps go bad on them very easy and can cost around $1,000 for parts and labor. Thanks for all of your help!

Re: 1992 3.1L

I have a 90 3.1 with 160K on the clock. I bought the car new.
Dam motor will not die for my 418 swap. (Has to buy a Vette for swap)
Just bought a 92 3.1 Vert with 150K.

I feel that the V6 are a solid car.

The problems I've had with the 90
1. Alternator's 5-6 of them during its life
2. Water pump at 158K
3. Refill AC at 150K
4. Steel freeze plugs. Need to change the 3 rear ones.

Havn't changed the fuel pump yet...

actually its got a brand spankin new alternator on it

how much does the water pump cost, including parts and labor?

ac does not bother me. I have owned 3 vehicles now, none of which had working AC and its never been a big deal to me

and also how much for parts and labor on the freeze plugs?

thanks for your help!! I am super excited. I may purchase this car tomorrow!

Re: 1992 3.1L

The alternators were a bad design. I had rebuilt ones and new ones lasted for 2-3 months. Got luck with one so far. Good thing for lifetime replacement.

Did the water pump myself $65.
Freeze plugs were ~$1-2 each also did it myself.

I'm guessing your not doing your own work?

Nope. I want to concentrate all my time on the 350. I am thinking 383 stroker with a turbo 400 tranny
