Harmonic Balancer Ring Shifted?

When checking my timing I again am seeing a timing mark that is 40 deg or more BTDC - waaaay off the scale and almost beyond view. Engine has run fine for years like this. I'm guessing that the ring has shifted moving the timing mark considerably... Car is 25 years old, 2.8L w/ 180k mi. Is it likely that the balancer has shifted it's outer ring due to age etc? Any problem with removing spark plug #1 and use a depth dial indicator to precisely find true TDC and 'remark' the balancer? Is it something I should be concerned about replacing? (it's been like this for years AFAIK) The parts stores also sell some sort or repair sleeve/install kit... What is this and do I need it if I were to replace the balancer? Do I need to get any special pullers to remove or install one? Thanks

Re: Harmonic Balancer Ring Shifted?

I paid $50 for a damper for my late-model 2.8L. I'd just replace it. It's not too hard.

Yea change it asap, mean the rubber in it is bad and it could start losing chunks and toss the engine out of balance.

Re: Harmonic Balancer Ring Shifted?

OK thanks. What about the 'seal' 'sleave' kits - what are those and would I need one in the course of replacing the balancer?

Re: Harmonic Balancer Ring Shifted?

I see 2 things wrong here:

1. The damper has nothing to do with engine balance. That's the flexplate/flywheel's job. All the damper does is to absorb the shock from the power stroke of each cylinder. Don't get on me about this, that's what they teach in the schools...
2. If you're replacing the damper, either you're getting a used one or you found a way to get a new one. If you are getting a new one, you don't need the sleeve repair thing because the damper is new and the front main seal won't have cut a groove in it. If you are getting a used one, you might want to get this just in case. Either way, invest in a NEW front main seal while you are down there to save yourself some headache later.
