1992 RS 3.1 Smog Pump Bypass????

Just pulled a 1992 RS 3.1 out of a back yard and am trying to restore to factory. Has been sitting for 4 years and the smog pump is seized up. Is there a way to bypass? Is there a belt that will work if pump is removed?

To eliminate the smog pump the best way to go is to find an idler setup. This idler looks like a spider with a pulley for a snout. Came on the 2.8's of 88-89 MY (or so, not sure of the exact MY). I do know that '89s came with them, no air pump on the auto equiped models (unless maybe if you are in Cali).

Use that and the serp belt for that year.

You can just remove the pump and run a shorter belt. But this causes the belt to whip along the long unsupported length. Not good for the accessory brackets and such. Along with causing a vibration.

It might be easier to replace the pump with a new one rather than try to fabricate something mickey-mouse style to replace it.

And you'll remain smog-legal that way.

So using GM factory parts from an f-body, on an f-body of the same engine, is Mickey-Mouse?

Good luck purchasing a NEW AIR pump. And even better luck with a junkyard part. They seize up when not run on a regular basis.
