Need help with my camaro
Need help with my camaro
I just bought a 89 camaro RS with a V6 2.8L engine...when I test drove it it was kind of hard to get it started took like 5 min to start just turnig the key...the guy said it had not been started for a while and the gas was probably really old...( i believed him because one of the tires was flat and i always saw it outside the shop for about 2 months) He always seem to get it to start after a while...i though maybe the battery was dead (because it looked pretty old) but wasnt sure.
Well I bought it pretty cheap...the engine looks great (only 80K miles) and tranny shifts perfect, but latelly i have not been able to start it at all...
the battery is brand new so thats not the problem...It doesnt even crank or click when i turn the key though...the lights turn on and the gages work + A/C but like i said the engine does not even crank or try to turn on...
Please help (i think the problem is the starter but not sure)
Thanks

is the security light on the dash on?
if not go under the car with aa small ball peen hammer and give the starter a few wacks and then see if it starts
if the security light is on when ur trying to start the car u need to bypass the vats system

the vats system (vehicle anti theft system) is very possible. the security light should come on for about 3 seconds and then shut off.
my guess would be the starter if you were turning the engine over for like 5 minutes. and yea, you should get some fresh gas. f-bodies are worth it.

Re: Need help with my camaro
I just noticed that the ignition cylinder is messed up...it turns like if it had the key in it...It stil wont crank though...but the car does power ON even without the key...
I have turned the car on like last week and it was messed up like that(with no key)...but i tried starting it yesterday and I couldnt get it started at all...I have not noticed a security light on the dash either
Is there any way that it started even with the ignition cylinder messed up like that.?

easy test here then. have somone probe the switched 12volt line to the starter while u put the key to the crank position.
if ur not getting 12 volts at the starter then the ign switch is bad.
unless the security light is on then the vats system is active,it costs about 50 cents to 1$ to bypass the vats system alls u need is a multimeter to find the correct resitance of the key and then goto any electronic place or radioshack and but the apropriate resitor and it gets spliced into the wireing under the colum. its very simple
