cams and computers
what does it mean if a cam is not "computer compatible".
what would need to be done to make it work
and what would happen if you just put it in anyway?

Computer compatible would mean its just designed for fuel injection.
Otherwise, it can be made to work, it will just be harder to tune.

it means you need to retune your computer to adjust your fuel map and idle speed.

Yeah, that was part of the reason why I went 2.8 stroker. With the build and the cam I had in mind, I was told by the engine machinest that I would have to tune the ECM to accept it as it would be to radical for the stock computer. For the build, the 3.1 set-up was more friendly to the 2.8 ECM. So far, after 2000 miles, no problem, so I guess I'm home free.
Now, after having said that, it'll probably blow up

you can, it takes some tuning though. check out diy prom, it'll make your head hurt. you could probably use the pre 85 350 without to much tuning to make it work well, but I'd suggest using the tpi intake for mileage and power.

I would suggest dumping the TPI intake and going with a stealth ram or an after market intake, the TPI intake is a well known weak point. It doesent even give a stock motor enough air at high rpms. I would not suggest using it on a modified engine at all.

Actually a pre-86 block will have a different head pattern and the TPI intake wont bolt up to the heads. And since its a pre-86 block some sensors will be in different locations and a few other differences as well.
