creating cold air kit... questions... 2.8/3.1
creating cold air kit... questions... 2.8/3.1
ok i have a 2.8 but it looks like they used the 3.1 air intake system... with the round box... so my question is where do you think the mass airflow sensor is? also is it possible just to rip out the airbox but use the same tube and a k&n filter instead?

If you have a 92 camaro, you have a 3.1, not a 2.8. the 3.1 was in all camaros and firebirds 90-92. you also dont have a mass air flow sensor, your car is speed density. you can get the dual snorkel intake from the 2.8 and run that on your car instead of a K&N cone, that is a factory cold air intake, and a TRUE cold air intake, not like a cone that sucks in engine bay temp air. do a search for a dual snorkel intake on here, there are a lot of guys who have put them on.

actually it does have a 2.8... some one swapped it... dont ask why it was there when i bought it... but i think it has the 3.1 intake... it has the round box opposite side of the battery way up at the front... so niether the 2.8 or the 3.1 have a MAF so i can just tear it all out?

your car does not have MAF, it has speed density. You can remove it, just make sure that you leave all appropriate sensors that are located in the tubing from the TB to the air cleaner intact or you will have drivability issues. I believe there is an IAT sensor in there, but im not sure, i havent seen under the hood of a speed density camaro in a while. And you may still have a 3.1, just with a 2.8 intake on it, the intakes are interchangable. the only way to be sure is to get the code off the engine block.

Re: creating cold air kit... questions... 2.8/3.1
3.1 never had a maf.
After 16 years, there is no telling what has been done to your car. You say your 92 has a 2.8 in it... very possibly. But what wire system did they use when the motor was swapped? Also, how do you KNOW its a 2.8, and not a 3.1 or 3.4?
I always wondered why my v6's speedo was always off. I later found out it had a 2.73 axle when it should have been a 3.23. I had it 4 or 5 years, the previous owner I knew had it 2+. Neither one of us touched the axle... so who did it, when, and why?
Re: creating cold air kit... questions... 2.8/3.1
i know it is a 2.8 cuz my mechanic told me... it started with a broken part and we bought the part for the 3.1 but we couldnt figure it out so we took it to a mechanic (good) and he determined it was a 1989 2.8l... where would all these sensors be... i cant see them unless they are underneath the air box...

if you wanna know where ALL of the sensors are, get a service manual from haynes or chiltons, lol. theyre all over the engine; intake, block, heads, exhaust, the whole 9 yards.

i have one but i cant really understand... it says on the 3.1 it is somewhere in the air intake after the throttle body... so that means anywhere... when i look at the air intake system i see no sensors... it looks just like a tube going into the box... i cannot see under the box though

On a 3.1, there should be an IAT sensor in the air cleaner can, thats it for sensors on the intake.
On a 2.8...
(camaro) You have an IAT in the dual snorkle on the drivers side. Then the MAF is clamped to the back side of the dual snorkle.
(bird), the MAF is right above the pass frame-rail in the plumbing. Dunno where the IAT is, but I think its also in the can.

Dude you use the same sensor in the can.
All you would do is take out the old sensor located on the Dual Snorkel and replace it with the sensor that is in the can.
If you go the Dual Snorkel route you'll also need the tube to connect from the throttle body to the snorkel.
