starter problem. going nutts!!

Hello, im kinda new on the tgo and more a V8 guy but this is a v6 problem and i would like to know your opinion. I have a friend with an 89 firebird v6 5spd. We swapped a 3.1L into it a while back and we’ve had a strange problem with the starter. It seems whenever you turn it over the starter disengages from the flywheel and keeps spinning. The engine turns over right away and would probably start up quickly if this wasn’t a problem. I’ve helped him put in a shim to see if that would help but it doesn’t help at all. Its almost like the starter is to far away even without the shim. What should I tell him to try because this issue has me baffled?

Re: starter problem. going nutts!!

I had a similar problem with my pickup. I replaced the starter and the problem was solved.
