top end swap?
top end swap?
hey, I have an '89 camaro v6 2.8 and it has been having lots of problems lately. It hasn't ran right in about 6 months. Anyway, I brought it to a shop that had it for a week trying different things on it and didn't get anywhere. I've had everyone I know look at it multiple times. I have both the haynes and chiltons manuals and have changed almost every sensor in the car. The one thing I can tell you is that the block seems solid, all 6 cylinders have great compression.
Well, a friend of mine told me I should do a "top-end swap" that there might be a new intake that I can put on to bypass the computer and sensors and just give me a v6 carberator engine that is much simpler for me to work on. Is there any merit at all in this theory? If so, can someone point me to a couple parts?
My second question is - if your exhaust is leaking very bad at the headers, could it cause the car to barely run if it is bad enough? The only code I'm getting is the o2lean code (which I can't remember off the top of my head, sorry!)
Thanks for all the help

Re: top end swap?
1) Bad exhaust leak at headers before the 02 sensor
2) Runs bad and gives a lean 02 code
No, definitely can't be the problem.
Seriously, yes, it could be the problem.

Re: top end swap?
You CAN go to the 82-84 carbureted intake, but you're going to lose a ton of power in the process as the carb was a 2 barrel and there really isn't an adaptor plate made for a 4 barrel on these little engines (AFAIK, someone correct me?).
And, like was said above, either get some gaskets for your exhaust manifolds or use RTV and seal out the air that is leaning out your O2S and killing your fuel mixture.

thanks for the info on the intake manifold! I may look into that further down the line. But first, I'm going to have the exhaust fixed this weekend and see if that fixes the problem. I'll reply with the results!
