'82 camaro
'82 camaro
So i am 17 right now and am going to be getting my car sometime this year. I don't have many details on the car other than it is automatic, v6, and it is some sort of sport coupe... I don't actually have it in my possession yet and don't know what the badging is on it.
My question is though, did the regular v6 SC come with an auto option, or was it just the Berlinetta? I've tried searching around to no avail.

Auto option? As in automatic transmission? Yeah, they were available with a 3-speed TH200C. Little metric tranny; the one I had shifted great, too. Those tranny's have a lockup torque converter, too, so the gas mileage isn't as bad as you'd think it would be with just the 3 speed. How long do they hold up? Like everything else, depends on mileage and past maintenance---but they're not as durable as the older TH350 or TH400. The driveshaft and shifter are the right sizes and specs for a TH350 conversion, if you end up wanting to covert the car to a V8 further down the line.
Other thing to watch on the 1982 non-Z28 Camaro's is the steering ratio. 1982-1983 saw the worst steering ratios that I've heard about for 3rd gen's. Count the turns lock-to-lock on the steering wheel. If you get 2 3/4 turns of the steering wheel, from full left to full right, that makes for some pretty loose handling and steering. Z28 steering boxes will bolt right in though, if you end up wanting to change it.
And since that V6 is carbureted, check your float. Sunken floats have a knack for destroying rod bearings on these engines...I've seen it twice, personally.

I have a th200 from a 78 monza if you need one lol it has like 60k original miles and I put most of them on it. They are ok transmissions as long as you stay under 200hp and they can take there share of abuse.

Not to poo on your parade or anything, but the early (carb) 2.8's have their fair share of problems. I'd look for something post-'85 if you want halfway decent mileage and realiability. Unless you plan on swapping a carb v8 in anyway, that way the swap will be a little simpler.
