Tranny problems???
Tranny problems???
I have a V6 89 firebird so I gues the correct name of tranny is the V6 version of the 700R4,
I just bough the car and It has 80K miles on it and runs great...tranny shifts fine AFTER a second of being in the gear I choose...
For example:
- I start the car (starts fine...good idle)
- BUT when I put the car on Reverse or Drive...I cant feel the car pulling until about 2-3 seconds I put it on reverse...Then (when I feel it pull) I can press the gas and the car moves ...
However If I dont allow the 2-3 seconds (till I feel car pulling)..and I just press the gas...The car does not move at all...(just as if it was in PARK ...it just iddles louder with no mevement)
- It does the same thing in all gears R,D, other D,1, 2,
Please help me out with some ideas and opinions

Do you have enough fluid in the trans if so I would replace the fiter and refill the trans to make sure Iwas getting enough fluid to get it moveing .

Yes, do check fluid levels first. After that, a fluid change may either help or make things worse, depending on how the car has been treated throughout its life.
Usually, reverse is the first gear to go when the trans is dying, FYI, because of the fluid pressures involved.
:edit: Also, does it make any funny noises or have any strange vibrations?

Re: Tranny problems???
I went to check on the tranny fluid dip stick and It showed low
...There wasnt any on the dip stick...idk how low it is...but when I went to put some in...I realized the car is leaking tranny fluid
not leaking a lot ...seems like it leaks when car is started...but if the car is off for a while and just sitting...it doesnt leak anymore
My question now is...Where is the most common place for leaks??
also how hard is it to fix for a house mechanic?? (i have never messed with trannys before though)....anyone has an estimate at a local transmission shop for this type of job???

If it leaks while it is running it could be your lines or the pump seal . You need to look under the car at the trans and see if you can narrow it down to where. If it is the pump seal you may need to have it replaced by a pro if you don't have meens to do it yourself if it is the lines you may get away with tightening them also check the pan gasket for leaks and the throttel valve connection at the trans for leaks . 9 out of 10 times it is a line leak but on occasion it can be a pump seal .
