just wondering if any1 has any prices on rebuilding the v6? as in the part prices if u have done it or not. what i will be needing...u know the usual stuff for it to get done. its a 3.1l v6 auto

I have not in my current car but the '86 Jeep Cherokee I traded for it I did . It was a 2.8 and #6 was trashed so me and my uncle got a used rebuilt engine from a friend of his and the crank was broke so to go over the heads again and replace the gaskets and oil pump and water pump and new bearings for the bottom end and cam plus the cost of the other engine I had around $1,100 in it . You can rebuild your engine for less than that since you don't need another block or crank so you could build your engine for around $400 maybe .

 

hmm if i could get it done for that cheap ill be happy, any1 else have any ideas on this or input?

 

I'm curious how much a shop might charge to rebuild it. I've found a 500 dollar rebuild kit and an 800 dollar rebuild kit online. Both on rockauto.com - if you can do it yourself there's your price choices right there. I would have to take mine in somewhere to have it done...

 

When you say a kit are the saying to you crank , pistons , bearings , rings , seals/gaskets , and oil pump if so that would be a good deal but if it is just gaskets/seals , rings , bearings that is way too much .

 

just looked at rockauto and the 800$ one has all that stuff u listed, but the 400$ one doesnt, it goes up from 400 to 800 each level adds something else to it, any thoughts on this?

would like to get the engine running like brand new seeing aas how it has so many problems its not even drivable, cant even give it throttle without it dying in park

 

The first thing you need to do before buying the first part is to pull and disassemble the engine and see if the bore is larger than stock and if your crank or rods are stock so you know what you need . You know for shure you need gaskets/seals , heads checked , water pump/thermostat , oil pump , timeing set , oil/filter , and coolant . With that said all you need to know is the bore and if the rotateing assembly is ok or needs anything other than bearings and if you need a new cam kit and bearings .

 

ok so should i try to figure out why it isnt running correctly before the rebuild and fix that, and then rebuild or what?

 

How many miles are on the engine and if it's ever been built before and if you get it running right do you even need to build it then ? These are the questions you need to answer first because if it has under 150,000miles and runs good and doesn't smoke or use alot of oil I would run it till I thought it needed a rebuild .

 

lets see its got way over 200,000miles, then engine hardly runs if ur even lucky enough to get it to fire, have been running it in close to this condition for half a year until it finally gave up on me. always ran ruff , just wanted it to run like new so i can get the car painted and finally have it nice

 

If you have another car to drive I would take the engine out and see what all you need to build it then go from there . You already have some prices to go on so that would give you a starting point . I would take everything into account and go into it with the idea you are going to spend $1,000 on this build so everything you need will be covered and if you spend less that is more you have to put into other things on the car .

Stick with the v6 unless you get a good deal on a v8 conversion with trans otherwise you may spend more money converting to v8 .

 

True true, but you might be able to come across a nice deal somewhere

 

If you go with a v8 and trans remember to use a carbed engine for simplicity and to also use a vacuum advance distributor .

 

well my original plans were to do a v8 swap, bought a 350 and tranny for 300$ and turned out the block was garbage. realized its gonna cost alot more to do the v8 swap then what i want to pay so im trying to get the v6 in good running shape so i dont gotta worry about these major issues im having for a long time again

 

I hope you can get it done for very little cash you may only have to do a rering kit to it and be able to get it like new .

 

well talked to several people and had them look at my motor, turns out we cant find a dam thing wrong with it...ran every test we had and nothing showed up on it. so my buddy is saying that hes getting a 350 for doing some work for someone, looks like thats probably what im gonna end up with

 

Just a few ideas here, did you guys check the exhaust to see if the cat was plugged? Also how long has it been since the fuel filter was changed? Sounds like it might be the fuel filter if you give it throttle and it dies. I had the same problem on my 305 a while back. It will be interesting to find out what your gremlin/gremlins are.

well the cat is gone cause it was clogged so i replaced the exhaust and deleted the cat.
the fuel filter was replaced right when the motor waas having its problems and still didnt help

 

Have you checked fuel pressure , ignition coil , distributor cap/rotor , and ignition module and sparkplugs/wires ?

 

yep all the tests check out fine

 

Then a rebuild may be in order .
