Dizzy and rotor help!!

I have a 3.1 92 RS..I pulled the rotor off but had to go get a new 1 thinkin I could remember where the old 1 sat but by bein a little off I could turn the dizzy to make up for it.Put the new 1 on and couldnt get it started even turnin the dizzy,so I have to set all the valves(new cam, lifters) cuz of this f*****G so called mechanic.Question cant I find TDC with #1 plug and just pull the rotor off and point it to the right spot(#1 plug hole)?..the old cars used to have a flat spot on the dizzy shaft so it was easy...this doesnt,,please help!!! thanx guyz....UPDATE..now with the plugs out i cant even turn the crank when i get to a certain point to set TDC..any answers?

Re: Dizzy and rotor help!!

If you can't turn the crank with the plugs out, your valves are WAY too tight and something is hitting.

Re: Dizzy and rotor help!!

Pulling the rotor off would not change timing and the rotor only goes on one way, has a tiny notch that keys it in place.

Someone gave you the wrong part, if your messing with your valves n junk over that get ready to be really pissed as your wasting your time and just screwing things up.

Sound like ya got the wrong rotor so it would not start as it can only go back on where it came off and would not change or mess up any timing just replacing it.

Re: Dizzy and rotor help!!

I think my shaft is missing a key(has a keyway notch),and I got the crank to turn finally,I am going to use the up and down method for setting valves with a 1 1/2 turn to tighten. Looking inside the dizzy I could see where the rotor was black from rubbing against the dizzy around the walls of the rotor center,so I put the old 1 back(wasnt too bad, just wanted to replace it),so yeah I think he gave me the wrong part. The shaft notch was pointing to #1 plug so I installed the rotor to match,it's raining so gotta wait till it dries..keep you updated,,thanx guys

Re: Dizzy and rotor help!!

Note that the key for the shaft slot is part of the rotor. Flip the rotor upside down and look into the shaft opening. It should have a molded in key in line with the rotor tip.

To help that always look up your parts online if you can first.

All the big chains have an online website, look up the parts you need first to make sure. as them counter monkies don't know crap about cars anymore and make mistakes often.

Blame the EOE laws that say you can't make folks know cars to work in an autoparts store.
