so i swapped my engine now i have issues
i have recently swapped an 89 2.8 into my 86 bird and now it has a bad shake to it. im assuming its the flywheel but ive searched for 3 hours and cant get a sure answer... my 86 is a 5speed and the 89 was auto so i couldnt swap the flywheels i have also eliminated the whole smog system so is it possible i didnt "fix" the lines right... also i just wanted to get is started because i completely tore the engine down and wanted to hear it start after 2 weeks of working on it so i have some exhaust leaks and the airfilter to throttle body are just kinda in place so im sure there are some leaks there so i just want to make sure the flywheel is ok but anyother advise would be greatly appreciated

gotta switch out the automatic flexplate for a flywheel neutral balanced i think. plus the pressure plate won't bolt up to the flexplate. good luck. im sure some one else will chime in if im wrong.

well i have the pressure plate on the flywheel (from the 86) im just not sure if the 86 was externally balanced and the 89 is internally balanced or vise versa or if its all the same ... im going to hook up the air filter set up completly and fix the exhaust leaks im sure it will help

just looked it up the 89 engine is internaly balanced. looks like 86 is externaly balanced. 87 is when they started internaly balanced engines. soo you need an internaly balanced flywheel for 87-89.
i did something quite simmilar but used the same year 89-89 one auto other manual. just swapped over the flywheel from the blown engine which was manual to the auto engine. with no ill effect.

i had the same problem with my 2.8 its your flex plate, is the 2.8 was pulld from an automatic transmission you need a different flex plate and fly wheel or else it will continue shakeing. if you dont fix the shakeing issue you will end up with a god aweful knocking in the engin from a cilinder comeing loose.

more accurately, you will knock the main bearings out of it if you run a ext. balanced flywheel on an internally balanced motor.

Re: so i swapped my engine now i have issues
I see you're in CT. When I looked a couple of years ago, there were several yards in the Hartford area that had F-bodies. Call around and see if you can get a flywheel (NOT a flexplate... they're 2 different things) for an 87/88-95 F-body 2.8/3.1/3.4 or even an S10 (up to 93 when they stopped using the 2.8 as the V6 engine). I had to get mine shipped from Texas when I did my swap. Just make sure to ask if the wheel will need to be resurfaced first as that will cost extra at a machine shop.
BTW, not only could the main bearings get screwed up, but so could the engine block itself. I've seen it happen. Line boring the block is BIG $$$.

knock the weights off the 86 flywheel, they are all made "net" balanced, then weights were added.
remove weights............

, especially with as old as it is. If it were me, I'd rather just see if maybe I could do a swap at a yard for the right one. You're not going to be using the old one anyways, right? Supreme Member

use a cutting tool on the weights then, or just buy the correct one

Re: so i swapped my engine now i have issues
yea i was figuring that was the issue.. i had called napa earlier to see if the flywheels were different and they claim that its the same part # and they say that the bolts are the difference ... which makes no sense to me but any way i guess im pulling it out tomorrow and seeing if i can knock the weight off because i know none of the parts stores will have the rite one around here and last time i called all the junkyards looking for something i had no luck even finding a car to get parts off of... but thanks for the help you guys

2. Are you looking at the CRANK side of the flywheel? That's usually where the weight is.
3. Try asking for a flywheel for a 90-92 3.1 or 93-95 3.4. That should work. If I were you, I'd try to nab this one ASAP, as he supposedly only has 3:

It might take a few days to get to you, though.

IF it has no weights....it would be a neutral balance, wouldn't it?

You can either spend a few $$$ on some grinding wheels and grind the weight off, or you can send for one from that eBay link I posted above. Should come out to the same price either way, and both are cheaper than new.

Looks cast in, other I have seen were spot weld on, like a brake drums, but they came off easy with a good whack.
