Converting from VaraJet E2SE to 2SE ???

I have a very original '84 FBody with 2.8L V6 (200k mi) and E2SE carb w/ computer controlled ignition etc.

I'm tired of dealing with the aging and convoluted end-of-carb-era emissions controls and am contemplating switching it out. Engine runs fantastic except for intermittent carb issues that I'm tired of dealing with.

I would change out the E2SE for a 2SE (early 80s S10) carb eliminating the mixture control solenoid, TPS etc.

I would also change out the distributor for a conventional vac advance distributor from an early 80s S10.

A few questions:

Q: Would the gas mileage be similar or comparable to my '84's current mileage (25 hwy)?

Q: Does the earlier 2SE carb still use the EFE pre-heat grid in the carb base gasket?

Qoes the ECM become a boat anchor or do I need to it's (removed) sensors?

Q: I think the EGR valve is computer conrolled - how would I hook that up (or should it be bypassed)?

Q: Will tbe cruise control still work OK?

...any other comments, inputs or suggestions regarding this contemplated project?

thanks

u might be better off picking up an edelbrock manifold and puting a 2bbl or the holley 340cfm 4 bbl on it then swaping to another stock carb

Q: Also can a Hi Perf HEI distributor for a modern 4.3L V6 work in my older 2.8L OK?

thanks

200k mi and 25mpg has come with an increasingly high price of spending too many weekends/eves 'tinkering' on this carb. Finicky is an understatement.

By switching to a 2SE would remove a good % of the finickiness - I hope...? Thus my questions...

Anybody know on any of my questions above...?

thanks!

Re: Converting from VaraJet E2SE to 2SE ???

The 2SE is an awesome carb, before they screwed it up with CC control.
Only problem they all have is the sunken float after 20+ years that can happen. But a fresh carb rebuild should be done well before that can happen, should.

Doug Roe who desinged the Qjet for GM said some nice things about it in his performance book.

I can tell you an 85 is the last year you will find what ya need on an s10-s15

What I did, found a low mile one for cheap. $200, kid spun a rod bearing.
Cheaper then what a JY wanted for just a used carb n intake. And I know the parts all worked fine before hand.
Wasn't gonna spend $400+ on just a fancy aftermarket 4bb intake.

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/v6/5...does-mech.html
"Well after some looking the 2SE is a nice carb, I can see how he gets 25 still.

The small 35mm main bores is ideal for fuel metering control at idle n part throttle, great for MPG/EPA but not performance. So the added 46MM bore with an air valve with a single metering rod. Metering control is governed by the air valve opening, So a sutiable mixture prevales reguardless of how far or "fast" the secondary is opened.

Now why is that a big deal, all them hooptie qjet mods to be able to snap all 4 wide open with out a bog, as the air valve can flop open to quick. Hence the needed of the vacum brake.

The 2SE doesn't need a vacum brake [has one though], with that gone and the tang that stops ya from going WOT at will, it gonna get a perferct does of fuel and respond like a deamon. Once the unneeded EPA added parts are removed."

Re: Converting from VaraJet E2SE to 2SE ???

Thanks Gumby,

Q: Do the 85/older 2SEs also use the preheated EFE grid?

Q: In addition to a traditional vac advance distributor from an older S10 - what about EGR? My '84 Firebird's EGR has a rather strange EGR activation circuit that is computer controlled and the valve itself does not respond to simple vacuum being applied

Q: Does the ECM become a boat anchor that can be removed at this point? Or is it used for anything else?

Yea they have the heat thing but you can't buy em anymore if your is broken. Places only sell the regular base gasket without it. Which is good, I have no plans for using it, just like the TB bypass I did to my MPFI system.
Or the heat riser vale in my V8.

yep it has EGR, vacuum control like the dizzy, I plan to plug off n remove EGR. Only needed if you have smog checks.

And yea you don't "need" the ECM anymore.

Dunno if your has an electric fuel pump, that may be a reason to keep the ECM, if ya don't wanna rewire.
