Is there a write up on replacing the fuel filter? What are the steps? Do you need to pull the fuel pump fuse or anything? or can you simply unscrew the filter and put the new one on?

 

It's not complicated but its a PITA, especially if it hasn't been changed in over a decade like mine...had to cut the lines and put a press on style one in, basically just put a wrench on either end....pretty straightforward, as far as location, go to your gas cap, crawl under there, look for a big metal cylinder with a nut on either end attached to a metal line.

 

do i have to worry about gas pouring out the lines when i take off the filter?

 

It's best to do this first thing in the morning when there is no fuel pressure. If you do this with fuel pressure, disconnect the oil pressure switch and the fuel pump relay and start the engine to bleed off the fuel pressure. The only fuel pump fuse also controls the ECM, and you don't want to remove that one if you want to bleed off the fuel pressure. Yes, fuel is going to come out of the pressure line when the filter is removed, due to gravity, so make sure to have a drip pan, wear safety goggles, and gloves. And you may want to spray some penetrating oil on the fittings a couple days before you go to remove it so the penetrant should have had time to work into the fitting and loosen any rust.

 

well the car isnt being driven right now, so does it matter what time of day? Also, do you have a picture of what the fuel pump relay looks like?

 

I don't have a pic of one and can't get one. Both of my harnesses are different from what they should be (one has a universal f/p relay and the other has the old style relay on a new harness). But, I can tell you the relay has a fat orange, small gray, and green/white wires on it, with possibly a big fat red one with a gray connector on the end.
