new fuel pump, new problems
So the fuel pump when out in my 86 2.8 went out and i decided that since i was going plan to turbo the v6 later that i should upgrade to a v8 fuel pump. the v8 pump was also cheaper so i got one designed for an 87 TPI 350. my understanding of the MPFI system led me to believe that the fuel pump runs at a constant and the fuel pressure and amount is controlled by the fuel pressure regulator, so i figured that the FPR would compensate for the excess fuel. i put the new pump in and the car is very weak and the exhaust smells like gas so i assume the car is running rich. Would an APFR solve the problem? i ask because the car starts weak and gets weaker the longer it runs which tells me that the fuel return isn't flowing as it should, and the standard FPRs between the TPI and MPFI systems share part numbers at Advanced Auto and Summit, and that tells me that they are the same thing. i'm pretty confused about this and any input would be appreciated. the car is my DD and i have to have it to take me back and forth to school, so putting in a different pump isn't going to be an option for a while so i'm gonna have to make it work.
