My 3.1 Build Thread

To start I thought I would share the story about my car. I picked the car up from a family friend for $300 dollars. Its a 92 Firebird 3.1 5 Speed Snow White. The original motor had a spun rod bearing. The guy threw a 2.8 out of an S-10 in with the deal. Well I needed a car so I changed the intake and **** from the 3.1 onto the 2.8 and put it in the car. It ran great. I had no problems with it. I replaced the flywheel, clutch, pressure plate, the whole nine yards while I was there. New rotors and wheel bearings in the front, new calipers up front new brakes all the way around it. Didn't miss a beat. I got the car going and had it on the road for about 6 weeks. Then one night I was coming down the road and a lifter failed. It blew apart and scored all the bearings in my bottom end. So here comes the rebuild:

1. Re-manufactured Crankshaft from Crankshaft Rebuilders Co.
2. Clevite main and rod bearings
3. Cloyes Timing Components
4. Melling M-Select Camshaft and Lifters Kit
5. Re-manufactured heads. (Reseated valves, new valve springs, and seals)

$600 and a lot of time later here is what the motor looks like so far.

Here is a picture of the car. This car sat in a garage for 9 years because the motor had a spun rod bearing.

PS: Sorry for the low quality pics they were taken with my phone.

Re: My 3.1 Build Thread

The BIG question: Why didn't you start with a 3.4 short block if you are on your third engine for this car?

I am just really curious, not bashing your selection of engine at all. I know that lots of other guys are asking the same question...

I hope you cleaned the engine block REALLY good before you put everything back together, especially the oil passage for the camshaft...

Re: My 3.1 Build Thread

Probably the original 3.1 block was used, at least, that's most likely what I would do.

I had the block hot tanked, typhoon washed, and honed. I didn't take any short cuts.

Also, I used the block I had. I don't make the most money, only a 19 year old kid, and I needed something reliable. I plan on building a motor though with a 3.4 shortblock, and some more bells and whistles. Just gotta get a better job first.

What is "typhoon washed"?

I haven't heard that term before.

It pretty much an enclosed pressure washer. Like a mini automatic car wash for engine blocks and **** like that.
