Getting started

Ok guys and gals, I am starting to get into my sons project car and would like some advice where to start. The story on the car is that the prev owner used it as a d/d and it died one night after idling about a minute. He said this happened several times before he quit trying. He had a mobile mech come out and work on it. They swapped in a distributor, cap, rotor, plugs, wires, fuel filter, and I think a fuel pump. After adjusting the timing it ran for 5 min then died again. At that time the mech suggested motor swap and prev owner siad "Im done" they pulled the new parts off and returned them if possible so i got the car with the dist in the drivers floorboard. I think I got it back in the right way (thumb over number 1 cyl check for press) now I am about to try and start it for the first time. If it starts for 1 min then dies where do you guys suggest to start? Ive read about checking codes but will neeed to be refreshed on that I think.
Anyone in Va Bch area interested in helping out with some work, I am willing to help out with your project including some home remodeling. I just finished a kitchen and bathroom at the house.

Re: Getting started

You should check your fuel pressure, if you have one of these http://www.harborfreight.com/fuel-in...ter-92699.html anything below 42psi will cause a problem, also check for a clogged fuel filter.

Re: Getting started

If the car is a 90-92 year car, I'd have the ignition system checked by a dealer (I know it's big bucks, but there was a TSB on stalling and similar ignition problems related to the ignition wiring). But I'd only do this after replacing the ignition module with an AC/Delco module. The cheapo ones are just that, cheap...

Re: Getting started

Thanks for the advice. I will have my son this weekend so we will look into those when we go to the shop and get under the hood.
