Knocking 2.8L
Knocking 2.8L
ok....chain of events here....
First my Transmission was stuck in second...on the way home from the tranny shop(didn't fix yet), I high revved it once (topped it out), stopped at a light, and when I started going again it started knocking, after about 15 miles the car had almost no power in second gear and it finally shut off and wouldn't start...I had it towed home...What do you think is wrong???

how many miles are on your block? And what shape is the engine in, in other words, was it raced, driven regularly, etc.
ummm....it's the original block, about 140,000 miles. I don't race it, except for a couple times, and hardly ever do over 80. I drive it a little rough on city streets but besides that???

Hm, could be a bunch of things... the fact that the engine shut off bothers me. There's no knock sensor on the 2.8 (like on the v8's), so a minor knock, or hell, I'd think even a major thing, shouldn't have stopped the motor from running.
Could the timing chain have snapped? 140k miles is alot for a chain.. if the chain snapped, the valves would be free to spin "however" they wanted to, until they stopped, or were slapped by a piston into moving again. A friend of mine's 2.8 (Celebrity) had the timing chain snap, and his motor stopped. I think you can verify this with a compression tester.. about $35.
I just replaced my timing chain with Cloyes' true dual roller.. it was $90 from Summit Racing.
[edit] Oh does the motor crank when you start it? Or does the starter motor not move either? Maybe the knocking was a type of backfire, and your fuel pump is burnt out.
