Yellow-line and redline are universal on all 2.8's and 3.1's installed in GM FWD and RWD cars....

5,500 RPM yellow, 6,000 RPM red. This goes for my Camaro, my dad's Grand Prix (same engine as Lumina), and every other 60 degree GM V6 I have been in. And thats a lot of them...

For obvious reasons, GM placed these 'limits' conservatively to keep the driver from getting near the true red zone which is more like 7000rpm. As stated in Chevy's "Power" books, all production V6/60 degree engines with cast-nodular cranks and forged rods can reach engine speeds of up to 7000rpm. The v6/60 is a short stroked motor that is able to take high revs (3.31-inch)

I really dont understand this redline thing, are our cars supposed to get up that high. When I slam my car I car hit about 7500 rpm in about 3 seconds, if that. Is that good??

you got 7.42 gears or something? If you're winding that thing up to 7500 you must be able to time your 0-60 with a calendar.

I drive my 2.8L pretty hard, and usually shift around 6000rpms when I'm out on the town crusing with friends.

In the rain I lost traction one time, and bounced my tach off of 7000rpms accelerating in traffic. I thought for sure I had messed up my engine, but it runs just fine.

I have an article on an '83 Firebird S/E that had the special, Firebird-only 135hp 2.8 H.O. 2bbl V6, developed originally for the Citation X11s. It states in the article that with the proper valve spring, a 2.8 can spin to 7000 RPM with no problem to the bottom end...I would assume then that if someone put better valve springs in a 2.8, they could spin it safely to 7 grand, or even higher...

No, to go beyond 7000rpms reliably/safely, you'd need to change at least the pushrods, and maybe even the connecting rods.

I'm just relaying to you guys what the GM engineer in the article was quoted as saying.

If anyone is interested in this article, I'd be happy to post anything from it. It was for the '83 Firebird S/E.

I don't know what I'm missing here, but when I'm driving "aggressively," I usually don't go above 4K RPM. It's not because I think I'll damage the engine, but after 4K, I usually don't ever feel any great power coming from the car. My power band seems to be from 2.5 to 4K, then it drops off. Is there something I'm missing by not hitting 6K RPM?

SW, how's your timing? My powerband seems to be from 3,000 to 5,000 RPM's... granted you're only losing 500 RPM, but that might help out.

My tach has never run past 5800.. usually it goes to 5500 before it shifts.

Spinning the snot out of a motor usually makes more HP, since HP is a function of RPM's. However, your intake and exhaust need to be able to flow enough to handle the extra spins, and the internals better be damn strong too!

I'm not too sure about the timing. I thought I checked it and it was 12 DegATDC, but I later found out that I was hooked to the #2 spark plug. DUH. I tested it last night, and if I shift in 2nd gear at 4000 RPM, I'm at 40 MPH. If I shift at 5000RPM, I'm at 45. So how does that seem.
