I have heard you guys talking about an AIR pump. What is this? Is it something smog related on earlier 2.8's? Also, I looked in my Chiltons (I know, it ain't nothing compared to that other shop manual I cannot remember the title of) and it did not show a MAP sensor for my year and engine. Do I not have one, or does another sensor take it's place? Just curious.

I believe We have a Mass Airflow Sensor instead.... MAF ... the 305s and 350s get the MAPs if i remember correctly... something to do w/ different ways of measuring air intake
yea a air pump is for smog porposes.what it does is inject air into the exhust manifolds, turnig to oxides of nitrogen into a non harmful gas, i belive NO2. the air pump runs of the crank driven by a belt and has think black ruber hoses coming out of it to you manifolds. good luck with your 69

Here's a fun fact; it appears that 85 and 86 2.8's with AUTOMATIC transmissions did not receive an air pump. The air pump was back on the '87 2.8 automatics, and it was on the 82-84 2.8 automatics. I wonder why 85 & 86 were different.
Your '89 should have it too, Vortex... let us know. Maybe '89 was a funny year for that too.

Well, if it belt driven, I don't have it. All I have on the serpentine system is (lookin from front of car at engine) is alternator in upper left, right next to it and a little below is the tensioner, upper right is AC compressor, below that is the PS pump, then H2O in middle, crank below, and lower left below alternator is just a plain jane pulley. Is that where the AIR pump should be? The way you guys talk, I guess I am glad I don't have it. Now if only I could figure out the MAP sensor thing!!!
Thanks for the info Tom!

Below that alternator should be the air pump, not a pulley. Hmmm... how did that happen? Cool! I wonder if the owner before you did something!
I found out my catalytic convertor was gutted when I bought my car.
