First thing I would like to say is that Auto parts swap meets rule! This weekend there was one at the local fair grounds (first one ever, in this area) and on top getting to rumage through vintage auto parts.. I managed to buy a pair of glass T-tops, a rear hatch with the rear defroster, and a matched set of IROC wheels, all for less than $200!!! But my question to you guys, and I know it gets asked alot.. but what sized tires are you running on 16x8 wheels? I want to be safe.. but I also want some /realy/ fat tires in the back. Any pics you might have would be great too

Secondly.. I posted a topic a while back about a 'compittion' hood and generated mild responce. but I did this sketch with hood my new IROC wheels and the factory style paint.. what do ya think?

Well, because you don't have ground effects, you can't fit quite as wide a tire and have it look right...

Factory used P245s. BUT, if you can put a 235 width on a 7 inch wide rim, you can fit something close to a 265 on an 8 inch wide rim. Not to sure about clearances, but I have seen IROCs with 275s all around on 17 inch rims.

No.. I did not get the spacers, how thick are they? and they are just for the rear right? If I remember right they are not that thick.. and could prolly have a set made if I realy need them. I have the tire place I bought my 15s from checking on prices for me... 245/60/16s were stock.. I might try to get 255/50/16s for the rear we'll just have to see

Jason E, I'm going at least with what IROCS had stock. i have a friend with an 87 Formula that has 245/60/16s on it and I love the way they look. I think with a newer RS wheel.. or some modern aftermarked wheels that are realy 'flat' it would look funny with no ground effects, but I think the IROC wheels dish in enough look good.. butthats my opinion

Were those Formula tires (245/60/16) the stock size? I'm planning on getting the Formula 16x8's sometime, so I wanted to be sure.

Also, I've seen 2nd gen Camaroes (got one here in town) with an identical paint scheme to what you drew there. Black hood, grey body, black and I believe red(?) pinstripes that go up over the sail panels?

It looked damn fine on the 2nd gen, but the lines on the third gen seem a bit more straight all around. I think it would still look good, though. Perhaps best with an RS flat hood, rather then the IROC vented one, as I believe the scheme is typified of RS's, not IROCs. Just my .02.

87LT,

I agree with you on the IROC rims. I have seen some Sport Coupes with IROC rims, and they look great with those rims!! All I was saying was that if the tires themselves were too wide, they may stick out too far and not look as good. But the rims?? I like 'em!! I agree, the later 16 inch RS and Z28 rims just don't look the same....

As for Formula tires, standard were P245/50/VR16s. Here's a rule to follow with third gens:

15 inch: All 15 inch tires were P215/65/R15. These were standard on Firebird/Camaro sport coupes '86-up (except Berlinetta/LT), '82-'92 Trans Am and '82-'87 Z28s. (Also, a few '88-'89 IROCs had 15s)

16 inch: P235/55/SR16, optional on RS and standard on Z28s for '91-'92

OR P245/50/VR/ZR16s on Formula, IROC, GTA and '91-'92 Z28s or '85-'92 Trans Ams with optional tires.

I THINK I got it all covered If anyone finds something wrong let me know!! I am almost positive anything else you find on a 3rd gen is not what it originally came with.

Reno, Thanks for the opinion... I just like ot know what others think.. a differant point of view You are right on with the tripes.. my car is silver and dark grey two tone and it has a red stipe and what think is a dark grey stripe (to match the two tone), but thats the way it came from the factory and from what I have heard the stripes are an 'LT' thing so I'm keeping them. The hood is a factory fiberglass one off an 82 Z28 HO.. and I think painting 'Compition' style will actualy down play the Z28 notches in it.. opposed to the alterantive wich would be painting it silver and then inside the indents, dark grey. Also I meant 245/50/16s not 60s (oops my mistake).. but I'm still having my friend check his formula tomorrow to be sure

Jason E, I think I understand now.. at first I thought you meant that they wouldn't look right at all.. but now I'm reading it as 'the tires poking out past the outer fender lip' wich is not what I want! I agree with you it wouldn't look right.. /way/ too 70's I think the IROC wheels (espcialy the early 'single groove' versions, like I have) have a strong muscular 'down to buisness' look that fits the camaros very well. The later RS wheels are nice but have more of a 'high tech' look that only realy comes together wit hthe Ground fxs
