What I need in my 86 Firebird 2.8 was take off the air box all together and attach an insulated piece of tubing to the MAF and pulled that as far away from the engine as possible without having many sharp bends and on the end of that is a conical K&N filter. I didn't really notice a difference until one day I took it off. I could notice a big decline in acceleration and throttle response so I put that back on and it hasn't come off since. It never gave me any codes and the car seems to be running better than ever.
