HELP!!! Anybody!!!!! Ignition problems????
HELP!!! Anybody!!!!! Ignition problems????
Glad I found this place, hopefully yall can help me out.
I have an 87 camaro 2.8 and about four months ago it just wouldn't start, acted like it wasn't gettin gas, but it was. So then I look over the distributor, and my distributer to coil wire was almost burnt in two. When I would try to start it it would arc, like it was shorting itself out. I replaced the wire and all was well.
Then about two months ago it started missing real bad, so I changed all the plugs and wires. It ran fine.
Now its missin again, and this time all I changed was the coil wire and it fixed itself for awhile but now its missing again.
I cleaned off everything off and the wires look fine. I think its called the ignition coil that the wire attaches to, anyway it wobbles, not alot but its loose. Is it supposed to wobble alittle bit???? I checked all my wires and vacum tubes and they are all fine.
Also its throwin one of my sensors off, The MAT manifold ait temperature, it says its too high. But the temperatures around ohio have been really cool lately. I read somethin about the Resisatnce ( ohms) is directly proportional to the temp. outside, so there is no way it should be reading "too High". Could this be related to my, coil problem???? Thanks for readin this long message, I appreciate it. Hopefully I can help yall out some time.. Thanks Mike

Your sensor could be shot, and it sounds liek you might be using an aftermarket coil? If you are, you need to step up the wires to 8.8mm. Anythign else will get eaten alive by the high voltage aftermarket coils thow off.

Lots done, lots doing.
Slowly building exterior now, new front bumper, then Formula wheels, then ASCD hood, then 91 GTA spoiler, all unpainted/mismatched til I can afford a good paintjob!!!

If your ignition coil is loose, I believe GM uses those mounting bolts as a ground for the coil. Tighten up if ya can. If they're the original rivets, drill 'em out, and put some small bolt/nut combinations in there.
How many miles are on your car? Your distributor might need to be rebuilt. The procedure is detailed in the Haynes 82-92 Camaro manual, found at most common parts stores.
I forget at the moment which way the MAT's resistance flows with temp. It could be that you either have the sensor unplugged (I've done that a million times when playing around my airbox)- that would show an infinite resistance to the computer.
OR, the wires to the MAT could've rubbed clean and are shorting on the body of the car, chances are near the airbox. That would show a 0 resistance to the computer.
I forget which extreme is which.. as in, which relates to a high temperature- very high resistance (infinite) or very low (zero).

Thanks Guys!!!
I just bought a new coil, and it is not nearly as loose as the one on my car so hopefully this is the prob. My car has 170,000 all original except that 700r4 valve body in the tranny. I'll let ya know what happens. Thanks again, Mike
