Speed density whatsis HELP!
I took my bird into the dealer today to get some work done on it i.e. help with performance and idle issues. The main mech told me that I should get a speed density chip put in my car. He said some stuff about the MAF was chog in them so they went to speed density or something like that. help me out here. Will a chip really help me out here? I'm thinking of getting a performance chip anyhow, so I'm thinking hey, why not kill two turds with one stone! Thanks.

He told me that all I need is a new chip. It uses graphs to determine the proper air flow, rather than MAF. It's supposed to work better than using the MAF, because GM had some sort of problem with them and incorporated speed density instead of replacing every single MAF. All the MAF will do after the chip is put in is measure air temp. The chip will do the rest, IIRC

Tell him to stop snorting crack. Stick with the MAF form of air measurement, it's more accurate than Speed Density, and can respond to engine mods better.
He is correct though, in one aspect. In fact, I just covered this little "tidbit" of information in a post in Tech/General engine, with a conversation with Vader. Look for the message titled "Of Scarlet somethings, air, and electricity". Aw hell here's the link:

Besides, when you get your aftermarket chip, it'll convert you right back to MAF operation.
