V6 Engine Replacement Advice Needed
V6 Engine Replacement Advice Needed
Hello All,
I have a 1982 Firebird SE 60 degree V6 2.8L with a 2BBL Varajet Carb, 4 Speed BW ST10 and a bad engine. I simply want to place a running V6 into the car and get it back on the road. I have an opportunity to purchase a running 2.8L 60 Degree Goodrich TBI equipped engine out of a 1987 Chevy Blazer w/an automatic trans for $400.00 (comes with everything except alternator and air compressor (both of which I already have).
My questions:
Will this engine work in my 1982, assuming i simply swap the existing TBI and intake manifold with my current manifold and carb.
WIll I be able to bolt the bell housing and clutch/flywheel and trans without any modification?
Do these later 80s engines contain a place on the block for the mechanical fuel pump that my car currently uses?
Any help and/or guidance would be greatly appreciated!

I know my MPFI car doesn't have a hole for a fuel pump, so I can't imagine why a TBI car would
you would have to use some kind of in line fuel pump

Might have to swap the front cover & oil pan over. Is there a mechinacal clutch linkage stud on your old engine? Make sure there is a hole for that on your new engine.
Re: V6 Engine Replacement Advice Needed
Thanks for the replies 58Mark and Ex X Fire, good point re: the mechanical clutch stud. This vehicle is had an auto and probably does not have a bolt hole for that clutch stud...No worries...I basically need an 82-85 LC1 or an LR2 engine that came w/a manual trans to complete this job...I may simply rebuild this motor using a 3.1 or 3.4 stroker kit for some additional hp...

It would be easier and cheaper to add a stud or make a bracket that mounts off the bellhousing bolts to add the stud, to the newer engine than to try and stroke a pre-85 2.8L.
The main journal size changed in 1985.5, to a larger diameter.

That sounds like a good idea, as I'm sure I can have such a bracket made by my buddy who is a fabricator / welder...If i were to buy the newer engine, do you know if the bolt holes for my 1982 bell housing all line up with the newer engine's block and if the Borg Warner T10 4 speed Trans input shaft would be compatible with the newer engine's crank?
