Re: v6 engine question

My first guess would be the Throttle Position Sensor. Is the car throwing any codes?

Re: v6 engine question

That is the first sign that something is wrong. Pull the codes and that will give you an idea as to where the symptoms are. Post the codes here and people can probably help.

Re: v6 engine question

this is my first car that iv really worked on too, although iv built engines and everything but this is my first one on one so im tryin, i think its just years of build up in the engine, i changed the oil and it seemed to help alittle, also replaced the entire fuel rail, including pump, plugs, wires, dizzy cap and rotter, and ign module, maf, and alot more and it still does it, these engines are just getting old, ima try the seafoam and hope it helps break up the gunk alittle

Save your $8 and use it for gas. Regular (leaded) gas hasn't been around for a looong time. All gas has enough detergents in it today that build up isn't really an issue. Seafoam is snake oil or a placebo, depending on how much you really want to believe it works.

??? Not an issue? I should stop selling 3-step induction cleaning at work then. I ran seafoam through my old 2.8 and I could see the piston tops again after years of carbon buildup.

Re: v6 engine question

Ha, you sell those 3 step things too? I cant believe people pay $100 for something they could do with an $8 can of seafoam, haha.
But yeah, seafoam is a great product. Granted, on cleaner, newer engines it wont do much. But on an old 2.8, 3.1, or any engine used as a DD for 10 years it can work wonders in the gas tank. Plus it cleans the intake manifold and crankcase, where gas doesnt reach!

Re: v6 engine question

yeah, that's what I used. it helps to have the engine at a high rpm, or use one of the smaller hoses. The regular vacuum line will suck in it so fast you'll probably kill the engine.

After that, just follow the directions on the bottle. Mine was so bad it smoked for an hour, and then for a while after I drove it around. I did it again a month later and it wasn't nearly as bad, so I know the first time did something productive

Re: v6 engine question

give yourself plenty of time to get rid of the smoke. I had to drive it around to get it hot enough to make it stop smoking, so drivin at night might keep you from getting pulld over

Thats funny. I still recommend checking the codes. Could be a lot of things. Rather than spending money on guesses just stick a paper clip in and see what codes are tripped. There is a thread on here on how to do it. Sorry if this has already been said.

Re: v6 engine question

yeah, the codes need to be checked. The problem still sounds like a tuneup issue to me, and I have a hunch the engine code is just some sort of sensor or vacuum leak

87 year old woman with a Camaro? COOL!

Glad to hear you recovered from the aborted V8 swap... I don't know why people think it's an easy swap...

Haha yeah, Thirdgen V6's are great first cars for someone who wants a good looking DD and something to work on in their spare time. The engines are very simple, and almost evey thing is easy to do on them.

Same here. I am 40 and I have had 52 cars. Some people are alcoholics. I guess I used to be a car o holic. I did most of that when I was younger living at home with my parents.

Re: v6 engine question

I'm not arguing with K-slice, but let me paraphrase him to throw out another POV that sums up my feelings about driving a V6

Thirdgen V6's are great cars for someone who wants a good looking DD and something to work on in their spare time, and has lived life fully enough to know that there's more important things than driving around like your pants are on fire.
