Strange Stall-Outs
Strange Stall-Outs
Hey, Ive got an 88 2.8 Camaro.
Just the other day I pulled into mcdonalds and while turning around the curb my engine shut off. I managed to turn off to the side without my power steering, put it in park and she started right back up. This has happened before in my driveway and I have no explanation.

Re: Strange Stall-Outs
Were you turning in your driveway? Sounds like engine rpm is dropping too low when the PS pump puts extra load onto it at low speed/idle, or could just have your idle too low in general, could also be that the throttlebody is choked up with carbon, easiest thing to try is cleaning the throttlebody. On a slightly unrelated note, my engine runs great(as it should given its been rebuilt) but will occasionally and quite randomly stall.
Oh and do you have any ECM codes?

Re: Strange Stall-Outs
Does it happen at full travel while steering?
I agree it sounds like you may be dropping too many RPMs from the PS, BUT there could be more than one thing causing it as well.
Can you confirm that it only happens when turning?

Re: Strange Stall-Outs
If it happens when turning, there is a switch in the power steering pressure line (power steering pressure switch) that may be bad. The purpose of this switch is the same as the ones in the A/C system, to tell the ECM to raise the idle speed to compensate for the additional load on the engine. If it's bad, it may stall. Just another thing to check besides the fuel load and the IAC cleanliness. I think that the only way to check this is with a scanner of sorts, however. I'll have to look in the FSM to see what it says.
And yes, I love coming around a corner low on gas. Blup... blup... Vroom!

Re: Strange Stall-Outs
I would guess that it is off, when mine is that low it even sputters on acceleration, sucks when it sputters going around corners one of the best things about these cars is going around corners fast, if its low I have to pretty much let off the gas going around corners because I don't want to lean it out.

I lose 4 gallons every time i come to a light.
When i fill up SEEMS to be the time my gauge is accurate. Half a tank..
Mine WONT start back up after the car has run for a bit, my "Check engine" light is starting to come on only at idle. it cools down, it starts (trust me, i wasted important $$ having car towed home the other night over this.) 84 Camaro 2.8.

Re: Strange Stall-Outs
Another problem related to this is the shape of the gas tank. When an accurate gauge says the tank is half full, it really means that the tank is 1/3 full. You'll notice that you can run a LONG distance before the gauge reads half, but the range drops sharply afterwards due to the fact that the tank is more rectangular at the top and triangular towards the bottom due to the shape necessary to not be whacked by the rearend movement.

Re: Strange Stall-Outs
what does it do before it shuts off? Does it really bog right before it kills? I'd check your cap first, see if it's arcced or build up of debris. I know when I got my car running that was a major difference and I already had my coil done because it wouldn't start (damn ecm). Think simple first and then get dirty.

When I first got my Camaro (had been sitting for a long time) I could make it stall on command. Turn on the rear defrost, blower on high, high beams on, start braking at a slow speed and bam, shes dead. Gave her a complete tune up and haven't had the problem since.
