V6 Rearend Gears

I know that 3.42s were offered in the rear-ends of the V6 camaros, does anyone else know what other gewars were offered? I have been looking for a while on the net and can't find anything with everything being related to mostly V8s. I would look in my manuals but they are lost from my move two weeks ago.

TIA

As far as I know, all 2.8/3.1 MPFI Camaros/Firebirds had 3.42 gears, and nothing else was ever offered.

some were offered with 3.23's, like my car had before I swapped them out for 3.73's.

3.1s had 3.23s?? Hmmm....didn't know that!! Learn something new every day. Must be with the extra torque, GM felt 3.23s were good.

I will still stick with my original statement regarding 2.8 MPFIs. I know 3 other guys with them, and have talked to others on here...and I have never met an FI 2.8 guy with anything other than 3.42s from the factory. I don't have proof unfortunately, but that certainly appears to be the case!

I've heard that 4cyl. camaros came with 3.73's . I'm actually looking for one of these rearends to put into my car. Were those rearends any weaker than the ones that came in the v-8 cars?

Should be the same, generic GM 7.5 inch rear end...I could be wrong though.

Good luck finding a 4 banger though!! They haven't made them since '85, and 90% or more of them are long gone...

I've only seen one in a junkyard. I don't know where they went; unless they weren't popular sellers to begin with.

But yeah the gears should be the same strength as what would be under a v8... Gm didn't put in different types of gears for different engines.

My '84 Camaro came with 3.23 gears, and it has an auto.

I'd love to have a four banger Camaro, though. They're neat cars! I saw one (shoulda bought it...) in a ****ty used car lot once. Four-speed manual, I think it had the F41 suspension, and a rear wiper. That would have made one hell of a daily driver!

My 85' Camaro had 2.73's originally, until one of my bearings went, and then got a 3.42 rear from a junkyard and installed it. To date that is the only main part of my car that I had replaced and with 222,000 miles on my car now, that ain't bad in my book.

HO L69s had 3.73s stock. The biggest difference between V8 and V6 rear ends is that many of the V8s got posi rear ends and in the early days they got the 9 bolt Australian rear end.

When GM switched to the Saginaw rear end in all F-bodies it was slightly different than the earlier 10 bolters. It got a 7 5/8" ring gear and 28 splines vs 7 1/2" and 26 splines. The 7 5/8" 28 spline 10 bolt is slightly stronger than the 7 1/2" 26 spline; similar to comparing fresh manure to day old manure...they both stink.

My 82 berlinetta has 3.08 gears. but i think that is because that was the only year a 200C tranny was offered. They switched to a 700-R4 around 1984.

S10 trucks have the same ring/pinion as the third gen f body unless you have the optional rearend. Gears in the 3.08 3.42 3.73 and 4.11's are common.GM went from 26 splines to 28 starting in 88 I think.

I know that GM has always had a tendency to put slightly lower gears in manual trans cars. My1992 Firebird 3.1 auto had factory 3.23 gears, but my friend with a 5 speed 3.1 liter 92 camaro had 3.42 gears in it. GM also did this with most V8 cars. I also have a 15th anniversary TA automatic with the 305 HO, and it has a 3.43 posi disc brake rear. The 5 speed 305 HO cars has 3.73 gears.
