question

I have or had a 1987 V6 camaro 2.8MPFI. I blew the engine. Now i need to get the car running. I need to know what is the cheapest way I can get the car going again.
I have a rebuilt 350 in pieces in the basement, and a tranny to go with it. I know with a V8 swap I have to swap alot of parts.

The other option I have is to have the 2.8 redone and put back in,

or can upgrade to a 3.4. I am kind of partial of sticking with the V6.

What would be involved in upgraded the 2.8 to a 3.4. Would i need a new block and such?

My friends are suggesting the v8 but its a lot of work and alot of money, plus I just put $900 into my 700R4.

Any opinions?

here are the facts...

if you go with the v8,

pro: horsepower, torque, fun...nuff said.

con: you not only have to change the motor, you need stronger springs, bigger sway bars, and all the other components that may need to be changed to support that motor.

if you go with the 3.1,3.4L:

pro: lighter, so may accelerate quicker if you really mod it, and less insurance payment. and you can just drop it in. the 3.1 and 3.4 all use the same components externally as the 2.8, as well as the exhaust/intake manifold.

con: not as much hp/tq/fun as v8.

its really up to you what you do with your car. my opinion would be to change it for the 3.4L, being that you would have a better base to start from (stronger) if you wanted to modify the engine. it would already give you gains, and + you wouldnt have to change out anything else, or worry about changing out anything else (springs/shocks, etc etc).

this is just my opinion.

and i missed part of the question on this one, so excuse me

in changing from a 2.8 to a 3.4, you need a 3.4L long block, which would get you the block/heads/springs/valves/retainers/cam/
crank/pistons/rods, etc etc.

you can retain : intake manifold(upper/lower/middle),
exhaust manifolds, all your accesories, and any performance parts that you used on your 2.8L. even if you have a performance coil and distributor.

Yup, this guy knows what he is talkin about. V8 is nice and all but also cost alot more. Also with a V6 just think you are alot lighter! BUT, like 94 did I would get the 3.4L and not the 3.1L But then again thats my opinion

if you already have the V8 engine and tranny just drop that in. If you're not into handling, the soft v6 rear springs should let you launch that v8 pretty good. Before you bolt that 700R4 on check out a stall converter from a 4.3L v6 its supposed to be a great cheap mod. If you didn't already have the engine and tranny then it probably wouldn't be worth it.

What type of damage did you do to the engine? Why not bore it 30 over, install forged pistons, shave the heads 1/1000 of an inch, port they heads, drop the crane 2030 cam in and new timming chain and 1.52 roller tips. Buy some NOS since you have forged postons and spray 100 HP and shock people..

I plan to leave my 2.8 and Bore it .30 over, shave the heads, get a cylinder head job with vavle job and porting, plus I will add all thecrane goodies a boost a pump, new injecotrs and dump 100HP of NOS in it for fun behind a locker and 4.10's....

Looks like I will prob go with the 3.4, The engine damage is unknown, haven't taken the egine apart yet. But it sounds terrible, It bangs and clangs and knocks loudly.

I figure if I am going to get that car going again I might as well upgrade the engine.

Thanks for all the advice.
