Accel sucks and 3.1L update

I think I may have fixed the problem causing my engine to miss.

When I tuned up my car, one of the terminals on the new Accel cap came off. We got it back in, but just to be on the safe side I bought a replacement Accel cap.

Guess what? The bottom end of one of the terminals, inside the cap, was missing. You could still see the plastic flash in the opening, which means a complete terminal was never even installed. This is a $17 cap! And what's up with the other cap, so crappy that a terminal just comes off during a routine installation?

Not only that, but the inside of the cap I was replacing was starting to disintegrate, the plastic actually coming apart. The terminal was locked in place, though.

I've never been happy with Accel products, but I thought they'd be better than stock. Guess not.

I haven't driven the car yet, but at idle it wasn't missing anymore.

Damn man, that sucks. I like Accel...hope I don't have the same problems you have had!

I have a new cap/rotor/supercoil/8.8 wires all from Accel, and I haven't had a problem yet!! I'll keep my eye on the cap though...how long has yours been on? I've had mine for 1500 miles or so...

Accel is known to be pretty good, I like them a lot, but they're also known for serious quality control problems. If you get a good unit fromt hem, it'll work flawlessly forever, and take a serious beating. If not, it'll be crap out of the box. Just check them close, and keep trying as long as you've got the reipt!

The Accel cap was in for barely two weeks.

It's true that when Accel is good they're great. I had a HEI coil on both my '76 Formula and '79 T/A and never had a problem. I don't have the time to go through a bunch of Accel caps till I hit the jackpot, though.

On another note, between the new stock cap and the Accel (on the first night I installed it), I didn't notice any difference. And the stock cap is only $8.

Same here. I've only bought ONE Accel cap. The one I bought had shavings all over the inside and the debris was quite sticky. Blowing and spraying couldn't clean it out. I exchanged it for a good ol' GM HEI cap!

I buy Borg Warner Caps and never have had a problem with them.. Them seem to work very nicely.. I do love Accel wires. I have never had a problem with them, but I have been leary about the cap, cause does a cap really help that much over one ya change every year anyway?

I always used the Borg-Warner caps until this time with the Accel. When it came to the Borg-Warner, I figured what the hell...if it costs $21 it has to be good, right? I did the Accel only because I had the rest of the ignition hooked up with Accel.

After seeing Bandit76 and jrr's posts though, I'm keeping my fingers crossed
