I got the B&M Shift Improver Kit (not yet installed), and in the 79 T/A I had, I put in the same brand.

Worked wonders, it even improved the gas mileage. I bought it because the price was right (about $42 at the speed shop then, now I got it for $30 through Summit).

I haven't heard anyting about the SLP kit, but I've heard that TransGo's a good kit as well.

I have a B&M shift improver...I'm happy with it.I also don't have a Trans-go or SLP.... as far as compairing the three......well...I havn't a clue
I know the B&M one is fairly cheap at $25.00(I think that is why I chose it in the first place).A fairly easy install(with some help from Tom )
I have read where people say the downshifts are firm with the Trans-go kit...that would be fine, except when slowing down to a stop. Now downshifting like that when I floor the pedel.....that would be FUN

I did the B&M stage 2 on my old tranny, and it rocked, I miss it, bad. I've heard transgo is better, but for the price, it'd have to be better and gold plated (B&M = $25, TG = $150), so I'd suggest the B&M.

I have the B&M Shift Improver and have been very happy with it.. I would do it again in a heart beat if I had the option. I did it on a rebuilt tranny so I have yet to have probs, but I woud be leary to toss it on a tranny with over a 120,000 on it...

I also have the B&M Shift Improver kit, and installed Stage 2. Nobody can say what parts are different in the TransGo kit, and I wish they would! All anyone says is that the TG kit is better... but nobody seems to know why. The B&M Transpak is supposed to be better than the shift kit.. but I don't know what's in that, either.

The B&M website has instructions up for the Transpak- but I read them- they're the exact same for the Shift Improver Kit. Apparently some genius scanned the wrong ones in. Altho the title says "TransPak", I can verify they're the Shift Improver directions, word for word.

How hard is the B&M kit to do? All I know is that its SUPPOSED to take a few hours with basic tools. I take it I'd need an afternoon or longer What's involved in this?

It's not mechanically hard. Some parts are a bit of a pain, though. There's also the pain of having trans fluid drip on you. The valve body mods are easy to do, the separator plate is easy to drill. The pressure regulator's a pain, but I figured out a good trick for it.

The first time it took me a day, the second time took me 1/2 a day. Most of both times was letting the trans cool and drip down. The first time I botched the pressure regulator, put the pan up, tried to drive the car and it wouldn't move- I had to drop the pan again. (I put the snap ring in a fake groove; when the PR saw pressure, it popped out.)

I have a tip sheet written up for my future web page if you're interested in it.

The B&M transkit is a shift improver kit and a filter from what I understand, so the instructions would be the same. It took me about 5 hours to put mine in, and not too bad, but hella-messy. Good luck!

Tom, I will hopefully be installing my kit next weekend. If you have anything that will help make it easier, please share! Thanks!

When I'm ready to do it Tom, I'd be more than happy to grab a copy of the tips...this isn't gonna be until Spring anyway. I'm just trying to figure out how much $$ to set aside for Spring projects...$25 for a B&M kit is a lot less than $100 or so for a TransGo!! Hence why I asked...

Guys, I'll put that info up as a new post. Oh, I think I was also supposed to re-post the major tuneup info for someone. I'd better get moving, eh?
