87 harness in 92?

87 harness in 92?

Ok guys don't flame me please. My friend has an 87 Firebird with a 5 speed and a 305 in it. It runs, and that's about it. He'll sell it to me for $500. My question is, will the wiring harness, brackets, Ac compressor, etc. work if I plan to drop a 350 into my 92 3.1 Firebird? i know i'll need a different chip for the computer. OH and also it IS a TPI engine, so will the TPI off of the 305 work with a 350? I was honestly thinking about just rebuilding a 3.1 with cam/heads and all that, but you have to agree, There is NO replacement for Displacement.

Keep a car? I'm averaging a new one every 8 months, so all my friends laugh at me, but I LOVE MY FIREBIRD. I didnt' like the rest. But I would like to have a little bit more power than my 3.1. So if anyone knows, please help a thirdgener out.

If you want to use your original ecm, then you'll have to convert the 87 TPI to Speed Density, which isn't a bad move (sorry MAF guys).

FYI, the ecm out of the 3.1 is the same as the 90-92 SD TPI. You just need a memcal from a 90-92 TPI SD. I've asked the question if I could re-program a 3.1 memcal and I was advised against it because of the possible differences in the ESC on the memcal. But, since you have the 3.1 memcal, get the PROM burning equipment, download the AUJP bin for the SD L98 and give it a try. If you get an SES light, then you know for sure it won't work. THEN buy a GM memcal for the SD TPI and re-program it to your desire.

As for the wiring harness, I suggest scoping out the PROM Board archives. I believe there are enough differences that it might be difficult. BUT, you might be able to re-use your wiring harness from your existing 3.1. Or, use it as a bit of a donor and "cludge" the two.

Your other alternative is to get the 165 ecm from the 87 'Bird and swap that. Personally, I would look at converting to SD and learn how to burn your own PROM. You will be MUCH happier in the end.
