How does insurance settle totalled cars?
I totalled my car last week. I'm still waiting for the official estimate to take to the insurance company.
My question:
How does Allstate Insurance settle totalled cars?
The agent mentioned to me that they don't do it by the blue book, my car is valued at $6200.
Does anyone know how Allstate settles their claims?
Another question, i saw this on the engine board. If i buy a 91 RS with a V8, will insurance be cheaper than a Z28 with the same engine just because of the name?

As far as I know you cant get a RS and Z28 w/ the same motor. RS's had the 305, and the Z28's had the 350.

Car: 85' Firebird (Project), 92' RS
Engine: 2.8L, LS1
Transmission: 700R4, 4L60E
Axle/Gears: 3.42 Open , 10 Bolt (ukn)
whoa, not every Z28 had a 350. Some had 305TPI's and some even had 305TBI. Just depended on the car. Don't know about how much the company would charge though, but considering that you totalled your last car, i wouldn't be expecting low rates on any of em' sorry.

Ok, to clear up confusion, here's a list of '91-'92 Fbody motors:
140hp 3.1 MPFI V6: RS, Firebird
170hp 5.0 TBI V8: RS, Firebird, Formula
205hp 5.0 TPI V8: Z28, Formula, T/A (automatic only)
230hp 5.0 TPI V8: Z28, Formula, T/A GTA (5 speed only)
245hp 350 TPI V8: Z28, Formula, T/A, GTA
Normally, take 5hp off the Firebird TPI setups, as their intake is more restrictive.

Here is what I learned when my 1983 Monte Carlo SS was stolen and crashed about a year ago:
1) They have a valuation book that supposedly give a value for every car.
2) They estimate the cost to repair the car.
3) If the repair costs exceeds the value, they give you the cash and take the car.
4) If the car's value exceeds the repair cost, they give you the car and the money.
There is room for negotiation here. In my case, their book said my car was worth $2750. This is a Blue '88 with 62,000 miles on it in perfect condition in every way! I flipped and fought it. They eventually gave me $4500 and the car and told me to go away. The final total was around $9400...
Fight 'em if the car isn't too bad.

(just bringin this back to the top) I only had my car for a week after i bought it and it was rainin outside, some @$$ was yeilding to ghost cars or something so i accidently rear-ended him, messed up my hood pretty good but not to bad, thats about it, oh ya and before i could take it to the insurance company to get it estimated i was goin down the highway and the ol' hood flipped up on me, wasnt the greatest time in the world for it to do that. But anyways that caused more damage to the hood, but when i took it to get the damage estimate they said it would cost more to fix the whole front end(which wasnt even messed up, just the hood)so they wrote it off as a total loss. I told them that i wanted to buy it back from them so i got it back for free AND they gave me $900 to fix it, so i went and bought the ASCD SS hood, got it painted and then bought a new cd player for my car. I made out like a bandit!!

I bought a 98 Katana 600 SS brand new in june of 98.. rode it around a while, and it broke on august 2nd.. had it fixed under warranty and picked it up on the 5th.. i was driving it home and got hit by a old guy in a chevy truck as I turned into my neighborhood..
It broke my leg (fibula bone) which I didn't even know was broken for a couple days.. I was walking on it 8 days after the accident with one of those air walking cast (these casts are chick magnets I still use it )
anywayz.. my bike costed 6100 new.. estimates exceded 2/3 of the value of the bike so they totaled it.. (bike was barely scratched).. I also got them to pay for the 500 mile maintance since it had been done less than 5 miles before the accident..($450)
along with a can of coka-cola which was under the seat.. the mechanic that did the estimate thought it was oil leaking
i got 6450.50 for the bike,
and 7200 for pain and suffering, lost wages, loss of sex drive, missed personal events, and everything else i foound i could claim from various newsgroups...and i had the walking cast (the kind that is like a boot with a little air pump) on for only 2 weeks... didn't hurt at all..
As you all might guess.. the insurance company for the other guy was of course State Farm I love dealin with them
one of my friends bought the bike for $250 from the insurance company.. spent less than 600 on a new body panel for the left side and a new chrome katana emblem... so for 850 he has a great bike..

When my firebird burned down last spring, I got $5800 cash + the car. They offered $6800 but I gave up the $1000 salvage value. I am actually surprised they covered my claim, seeing as I had removed the factory V6 and replaced it with a carbbed V8.
I was very surprised in that they gave me a very good book price for the V6 version of my car. I have American Family, and this is the 1st decent thing they've ever done for me...
So basically, the insurance company looks at your car and determines how close it is to a specific book value, then should give you that money, plus money for titling a new car.
Don't press your case on the fact that your car was modded (if indeed it was), as you would need to determine if your car should be viewed as "more than" or "outside of" book values standards before the accident.
