its not required that u put a new one, but it is defelately a good idea. do u really wanna pay $700 for a nice tranny to have the vanes in the converter go and take out the converter and pump costing u another $400+ dollars. like i said its not required but a good idea.

Why do you have to get a new trans? If the old one went bad than there is probably stuff inside the torque convertor. Is the new trans the same as the old one? If not, the TC might not fit.

I would say replace it with a heavy duty one depending on your plans with the car.

I'm with Pete. Your old TC could be full of metal shavings; you don't want to have those inside your new trans.

Well, it's not so much metal in the fluid as you look at it, but metal stuck inside the torque convertor. You could always cut open your trans filter and unfold it- that's a good way to check for metal.

Reusing the TC's really not a good idea. If you want to, though, there are procedures to flush the torque convertor; they're covered in tranny books. The guys that rebuild torque convertors actually cut them open, clean them, and re-assemble them. Sure your TC might be fine, but for $80 do you want to risk damaging your new trans?
