How to tell the tranny date?

Someone mentioned that the 91-92 tranny is loads better then any other. I know my spare tranny in the garage is an 88, but I have no idea what the new on is? It might be a 91-92, but how can I tell?

There's a date stamp above the fluid pan bolts on the passenger side of the trans. There's a little metal ear (part of the case) that sticks up with a code on it. I'll see if I can get the decoding info tonight for you. The big "Y??" stamped into the bellhousing just means "700r4".

Okay, looks like GM also changed the ID patterns on the 700r4's. Here goes:

All 700r4's: ID stamped into case on right side, just above the trans pan.

82-84: First digit: 9=1982, 10=1983, 11=1984. (How can one digit be a 10? Do they mean 9,0,1 ?)

85-93: First digit = last digit of car year. (i.e. 5 = 85, 2 = 92)

So, whatchya got in the car?
