Where is VIN number on 60 degree V-6 engine blocks

I heard CA may go to checking VIN number on engine blocks.
Where is it so I may remove it!
When I did my swap, I NEVER saw it at all and I looked.
Only saw casting dates, if that.
Thanks!

Karl, on 3.4L engines this number is found on a pad at the front of the block, just above the water pump. Optional locations for the number are on the lower left side of the engine block, below the exhaust manifold and on the left rear side of the block on a casting to the rear of the manifold.

My thoughts on seeing these identification numbers removed would tend to make me think that the engine had been stolen.

It's up to you if you want to remove them.

Good luck in deciding whatever you do.

Very cool!
I discoverd that the 1985 blocks have the VIN behind driver side exhaust maniold, on a verticle rib, infront of tranny bellhousing area.
These new style exhaust manifold with the 3.4 heat shields cover that area so well!
I'm only letting them think I've got a 1985 block.
Someone isn't going to go thru the effort of checking there.
In fact, I'll take this to the smog guy for a pre-visual check, next week. I'm due around July time, this year.
If I lead him to believe I've got this 1985 car, I bought and it'll need smog soon, do I do anything, now.....he will think by time it comes this summer, he'll omit that detail (that's my car is a legit car).
In CA, they test your gas cap. That part is read by a machine (and determines pass or fail of test, too), numbers on block are not.
Thanks for the 3.4 locations.

karl, i really wouldn't sweat the smog inspection. don't you have a few buddies in the industry??? if i had a clean running V8 under my hood i could just take it to the smog guy at work and say "yes, this is a 3.1L engine " and that's it....visual inspection done.

Hi Dan,
I pretty much plan on doing that.
I have heard word on the street (last noight at Bob's in Burbank, too) that the smog people now must flunk a certain percentage, to keep license.
Sounds like the cops & their quotas, to me.
Just keeping ahead of the enemy! I worked to hard to be surprised
