How does a perfect V6 run, anyways?

How does a perfect V6 run, anyways?

I've never really stopped to think about whether or not my engine is running right, but now that I do, it may not be. Does a "perfect" 60*V6 just sit there and purr like newer vehicles, or are they a bit rougher than that? If they're supposed to purr, then something's the matter with my girl, cause she sure don't! What should I look at to correct idle speeds? TIA

I can't tell you what a new v6 sounds like but I got mine from an old lady who only drove it to work and back and it idles pretty smooth but not like a new car. As far as idle, thats controled by the ecm.

My v6 is in pretty good shape, and it's always had a slight lope to it in idle. I attribute that to worn-down cam lobes.. but it's been that way for the past 4 years or so; way before the 213,000 mile mark.

My 2.8 used to idle very smoothly, if it wasn't for the slight rumble in the exhaust( random cat, 2 1/4 inch pipe/ flowmaster catback) you couldn't tell the car was on, but just like tom said it's kinda lopey not like the idle on newer engines.

My 3.4 idles rather smooth.
It pulls atleast 20 inches of vacuum out of gear, at idle & in gear idle is about 17-15 inches.
I use vacuum gauges on all 5 of my cars. It tells alot about the condition of the engine and the gas milage I get.
Yes, I do believe in tachs, also.
This Firebird is getting a full gauge set up, very soon.
