3.1 L ...Dynomax vs. Flowmaster 80 series

i have been watching this board for a while and overclock i know that you have a Dynomax...would you suggest that over the 80 series?? im really not looking for performance or better air flow, just a deeper idle. My 6 sounds like there is a rattle or something in it, i cant figure out what the problem is...maybe its because there is a small crack in the intermediate pipe?? any help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the board blackstripes. You'll probably get mixed answers here, and 3/4 of the board will stand by Dynomax. Reason being is because they just sound so good on our cars. Caution though, if you're wanting LOUD, dont get dynomax. Get the 80 series. I personally hate Flowmaster though. Dynomax gives you a very low town idle and sounds very good throughout the range, but it is quiet. In fact, one of the guys on this board put a Dynomax on his crate 350, and it's so quiet everyone told him mine was louder. It really is quiet.

Also, from what I hear, the 80's seem to sound ricy when above 3K RPM.

i have the 80 series on my 3.1 at idol, it sound very good, very deep, but above 4k RPM's its alittle ricing, not that bad, i would go with the 80 if you want people to notice you, i love mine, i don't care what anyone says or thinks, i don't mind it.

For all of us with a V6 and an exhaust, try this out: have someone drive your car past you at high RPM, round 3k or 5k and make sure its at that RPM when the back of the car passes you. You might hear some crappy "BUZZING" that comes out the exhaust. Thats the "ricy" sound everyone here is talking about. BUT! luckly there's a solution: DYNOMAX MAGNUM RACE BULLET MUFFLER!! just have that baby put along the I-Pipe and problem solved! Payce.

The flowmaster on my 2.8 bird makes it sound like my 305 formula in the early RPMs,I mean it really rumbles; higher up it sounds different, definitely not like a v8 and most definitely does not sound rice. I like my flowmaster.

I was thinking about getting a Flowmaster 80 series for my 3.1. I have two questions, which produces better peformancen the flowmaster 80 series or the Dynomax? I also would like to know if anyone has put a Borla or slp cat back system on their car. I've heard the borla system on a 4th gen firebird and it sounded really nice. I want to know if it would sound nice on a third gen 3.1.

The reason most of us swear by Dynomax is the price.. You can gfet a nice mandrel bent cat back for under 150.00.... Ya just can't beat that in my humble opinion. Sound wise it is okay, but I was looking for the most bang for the buck and sound never came into play.. At idle it does sound nice though.

I guess I'll have to give Flowmaster a try, or I'll wait until my friend with a 95 firebird V6 gets one so I hear what it sounds like.

That rice sound after 3k can be eliminated with a high flow cat and bullet muffler by dynomax... i'll try to get a sound clip up as soon as possible on my car.. payce.
